Just got back from the supermarket and could not believe how high the prices have gone up! Lets share what store brands or alternate brands are just as good as the more expensive ones

I am sure it is because of the rise in oil etc. But the prices were crazy. Here is some brands I have switched to to save $$ while food shopping:
Stop and Shop or any other store brand of stove top stuffing, Trader Joes ketchup to me is just like Heinz ketchup, store brand jarred gravy- in the glass jar tastes like the name brand too, store brand milk .

Stop and shot brand chips and cheese doodles are really good and cheaper! Their fruit bars are cheaper and just as good.

Good thread. I can't believe how much milk and bread have gone up, even WalMart raised their price almost double on no sugar added apple juice! It's getting harder to stay within my budget, even on store brand stuff.

I buy almost everything store brand unless there's a better deal/sale.

Onion soup mix
Bread crumbs
Spices
Flour
Sugar
Butter
Milk
Cheese
Granola bars
Salad dressing
Potato chips
Pasta
Tomato sauce

Some things I always buy name brand:

Hellman's Light Mayo
Heinz Ketchup
Gulden's Mustard
Kellogs Cereal
Chips Ahoy Cookies
Potato Bread
Peter Pan PB

Great thread. I too buy primarily store brand. The only thing I won't is tomatoes. SanMarzano all the way. Bj's products are good too. If it's not store brand I buy the item only on sale. If I think of specifics I'll try and upddate.

I had to run out for a tiny container of milk and it cost me $2.80!! what a rip off.

Even the store brand stuff has gone up! Stop and Shop pasta used to be 89 cents a box. It's $1.09! Ronzoni was actually cheaper last week!

I rotate my shopping between Target and Stop & Shop and buy what items I know are cheaper at each one.

I also will by a few things at (sounds gross, but) the Dollar Tree (i.e. spices, pancake syrup, juice for DS).

I also have really been disciplining myself to stick to a list and only go shopping when we really need stuff. I honestly do have a lot of food in my cabinets/freezer to begin with.

I live in Oceanside and there is a Pathmark in East Rockaway. I heard it is closing soon. They have great prices and great sales. I think Stop and Shop, King Kullen and Waldbaums are really expensive. I am going to miss Pathmark. I don't know what I am going to do. I should start cutting coupons. THeir is a show on TLC called Exceptional Coupons or something like that. Not sure if it will be a series or just a one shot deal. Have to find out when it is on.

I was thinking the same thing when I went shopping today. I was like I almost always buy store brand items and even those items have increased in price drastically

I heard they are putting housing there. I guess Pathmark will close when Stop and Shop opens

Coca-Cola
Hellmans Mayo
Heinz Ketchup
French's Mustard
Organic Milk-always find on sale and hope to have a coupon as well


Prices are craaaaaaaaaaaazy so I only shop with coupons and store sales. I keep the menu simple and make meals based on what I have or can get on sale. If there is a good sale I stock up. Last week Smart Pasta was on sale 10 for $10 and I had coupons from magazines. I got 20 for $10.

Some things we are looking into doing are: buying 1/2 a cow. It's a lot up front but it's savings in the long run. We'll also be canning and freezing this year. Corn, bruessels sprouts, green beans, cauliflower and brocolli. We also make our own bread and pickles. Very easy and soooooo good. I had a freaking heart attack when I bought cauliflower last week and it was $4 a head I said enough we'll be planning ahead this fall and stocking up

this is a great thread! it is getting ridiculous how expensive food among other things are getting. i buy store brand jell-o, milk, pretzels or chips, canned veggies.... i'm sure there are other things that i just can't think of right now.

The price of groceries is

I think our grocery bill has literally gone up easily $100/month and we buy mostly the same stuff every week.

I went last night and I spent close to $70.00 on just "fill in" items. I also got a small amount of produce and a small thing of pork and chicken.

It just seems like the prices at Stop and Shop are increasing every week. I can't bring myself to spend over $20.00 on a roast, or $18.00 on pork chops.
