it looks like nb has a milk allergy
my 5 week old had blood in his diaper this am. I took him to ped, they tested the diaper, definitly blood. ped said could either be a anal fissure or milk protein allergy. he did not see a fissure, but said can be there. but diaper also had mucus, so hes leaning towards allergy. i am ebfing, told me to cut out dairy and soy for a week, then we'll see. possibly reintroduce.
i know lots of people have dealt with this- any advice? how did you handle/confirm/test it ?did you see an allergist/GI doc? can I do this and ebf?

I don't know. . I did not have a ped tell me but am pretty sure my DS has a milk allergy. I am EBF and just cut out dairy about a eight days ago and have seen a HUGE change in his behaviour. .
do you have any outward signs of distress? like excessive crying, wiggling, gas? If you give up all soy and dairy for a few days, you should see a change (in diapers and/or behavior) if it is a milk allergy. .but to be sure, it's really important to give everything up. so I had to make sure I was reading labels, asking at restaurants etc. .
kelly mom has a good cheat sheet for label reading about "hidden milk" in things.
good luck!
oh and ETA. .that is is usually the protein in milk that is the allergy so you can def EBF by eliminating the dairy!

bump- anyone else? fwiw, db had 2 diapers with blood this am, but nothing since. if it was an allerggy, wouldn't it continue?
My DS had a dairy/soy allergy and I would see blood and mucous in some diapers and not others. It will take a while to completely clear up after you change your diet.

Re: it looks like nb has a milk allergy
DS will be one this week and I've been EBFing him since day 1. He was diagnosed at 6 weeks with a dairy allergy because of blood in his stool. I've never seen visible blood, it's always been microscopic (my ped does the guac testing w/ stool cards). He kept developing more allergies (soy at 6 weeks, egg around 3 months, almonds at 5 months, peanuts at 6.5 months and pineapple at 11 months ) so since the peanut allergy at 6.5 months I decided to go on a strict elimination diet, meaning no dairy, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish or shellfish.
Your DC might have non-IgE mediated allergies like my DS, which do not show up on a blood test or skin test. I saw an allergist (Dr. Goldstein in RVC) and he basically told me I was crazy, that my DS wasn't allergic to anything and the blood in his stool & eczema was completely unrelated to foods or allergies Needless to say, I do not recommend him. I then saw a GI, Dr. Gold in Babylon, who was great. He explained that non-IgE allergies usually don't show up on the testing, and a lost of allergists don't even consider them "allergies". He said my DS had all the classic symptoms of non-IgE allergies, but if I wanted to be sure I could do a sigmoidoscopy. In all of his 18 years or so of practicing, when a patient presented with the same symptoms of my DS (fussiness, blood in the stools, reflux, eczema, behavior improving after eliminating allergenic foods) all but TWO were non-IgE allergies. I opted not to do the sigmoidoscopy because at that point (DS was 7 months) I just knew it was allergies. Plus his stool had tested negative for blood around 4 months, so at one point it had gotten better (before he developed more allergies).
Dr. Gold's wife is also a pediatric allergist, so I brought DS to see her 2 weeks ago after he got hives from eating pineapple. She confirmed everything Dr. Gold said, and she is fairly confident that he will outgrow all of his allergies.
My point is, I think you might be better off seeing a ped GI instead of an allergist. From what I've read on LIF, not many are very BF friendly. Dr. Gold is, and another female doctor that works at Schneider's (not Dr. Moy, she was also terrible, dismissing all of my concerns). I posted on here and got several responses, I'm sure if you do a search you can find the other doctor.
If you really want to continue to BF, it is possible!!! The beginning was difficult for me, trying to find other options, eliminating all traces of dairy & soy, but it became much easier as time went on. Whole Foods & Trader Joe's are my favorite places, I don't shop anywhere else now, except Fairway sometimes. There are a lot of options out there, even for sweets like cookies & ice cream. I actually prefer eating this way, I feel much better & I know it's a healthier lifestyle. I don't think you have to eliminate everything like I did, but eliminate dairy to start and you can go from there.
Good luck!!! FM me if you have any questions or need someone to talk to.
