Is it illegal for a gas station to change their prices twice a day?
I have noticed this at a gas station by my house.

The gas station by my job I swear changes their gas prices by the hour. At 9am it's one price, during lunch it's another and at the end of the day it's another.
I don't think it's illegal in this state otherwise we'd have no gas stations.

No it's not illegal and if you aren't happy with the way they do their business I would just shop at another gas station.

all of them by my house did this yesterday. From 3.59 to 3.64 to 3.77 all in one day. It is out of hand.

The gas stations are struggling with the increase in gas too. When prices go up, people buy less, so they need to up the price to get the same profit to keep their businesses running. Also when prices go up, people buy less at the mini-marts (where probablymore money is made)

i dont think its illegal all weekend I kept eye balling the prices and they would change 2x-3x a day. In one night it rose 9 cents.

Here's my issue with the gas... the gas that is IN their tank was ALREADY purchased at one price, so how do they get-off raising their price more than once per day for the same tank of gas?

They do not get to determine when the price changes. if they are exxon, for example, a rep from exxon will call them and tell them when to change the prices. If they do not comply, they risk losing the licensing to sell that brand of gas.
(I asked the exact question to DH friend who owns a gas station the other day  ).

Because when the gas prices go down the reverse goes into effect.

It is based on the price of a barrel of crude oil and the value of a dollar. Weak dollar and OPEC setting crazy prices on crude oil =expensive petro. Supply and Demand change every minute so it is not illegal to change prices twice a day.

Prices are changed according to the gas load. Some gas stations get multiple gas loads a day- so their prices can change multiple times a day.

that is what I thought, they can't change the price until they get a new delivery. A lot of stations got in trouble after hurricane Katrina when they increased their prices before receiving a delivery.

The stations will get in trouble if they raise the prices without the Corporation telling them to do so. If the entire corporation changes the prices, the stations have to abide.

I thought I heard that they could only change the price once a day...but I can't remember when or where I heard it- just one of those things that stuck in my head.
ETA: I must've heard it from here a few years ago. Apparently, it applies only to New Jersey.
