Is anyone's DD in girl scouts?

I've been asked to consider being a troop leader for a Daisy troop next year at DD's school. Nobody else has stepped up and right now it looks like there won't be a troop otherwise.

I have no idea what kind of time commitment it is realistically, all I've been told is that I can have meetings with the girls once a week or every other week. But I know I'd need to open a checking account for the troop, with cookie orders and whatnot there must be a decent amount of paperwork, getting the cookies out to the right girls, planning meetings....it feels a little overwhelming to me at this moment.

Just trying to get an idea of what it really entails. TIA.

Re: Is anyone's DD in girl scouts?

Hi Cathy-

Unfortunately that seems to be the case with GS, there aren't enough leaders to go around. DD is a Daisy Scout and her troop is fabulous. I love the leaders and all the kids are so adorably sweet. I was willing to do something to make the troop work but I too was not sure of the commitment initially either given that I have the other 2 kids and then we had a troop so it wasn't necessary. They did need 2 other parents to be registered so I was 1 of those and then was the Cookie Manager for our troop. I see you have a few offers to speak with other leaders here already but if you need another, our leader would gladly speak to you as well. She is so friendly, I'm sure she'd love to help you answer a few questions. You could also call the GS of Nassau County office and speak to Lorna (I can't recall her lastname but I can get it if you need it and her #) - she is very helpful and she is a more senior person in the organization. I think if you have other parents that are willing to help make it work is the key to it being successful. I know they are disbanding a Daisy Troop that my DD's friend is in bc other parents weren't willing (or weren't able) to help out. It's a shame bc the girls really get a lot out of it. My DD has a little throng of other Kindergarten girls that she knows well now in addition to the ones in her class. She's not shy but some girls are and getting involved in these groups are huge, I've seen a few girls come out of their shells. I like to go to the meetings when I can to help out even when I'm not needed bc they are so cute Chat Icon

I am a Brownie leader(about to become junior Girl Scouts) and I have 18 girls in my troop since Daisy's because nobody else would step up. We had to stop taking girls because we are just too big. There are alot of sad girls that did not get in.
You should go for it. Your DD will love it if you do!

ITA. I think you'd do an amazing job.

The GS are an amazing experience for girls. I got as far as my Silver Award my Junior year of HS!
