no, not even considering it. been there, done that and the pain was unbearable. i will ask for an epi at the first moment i possibly can.
same here. I tried the whole-I'll wait as long as I can until I ask for the epi and it was bad. I wanted to kiss my anesthesiologist-I could not thank him enough

i don't know.
i really wanted to have a totally natural birth the first time and ended up with scheduled c-section.
this time i am open to all possibilities. i don't want any preconceived expectations when i go into labor. if i do, i might be disappointed.

first time around i got an epi when i was 8cm dilated and it was the best thing i could have ever done for myself. it allowed for me and DH to enjoy the fact that we were about to have a baby. had a GREAT experience with it...
second time around my labor was much, much quicker and milder and i actually didn't have time for pain relief (did the whole active labor and delivery phase in less than 5 minutes...).
honestly, both deliveries were just fine. i didn't feel any better or worse with either of them.
having BTDT twice, my advice would be to have an idea of what you would or wouldn't like, but not to get too attached to that idea... because anything can happen in the labor process. i would keep an open mind overall...

If you really want a drug-free birth, find a supportive midwife or doctor. It's very hard to go natural when you have a nurse asking you every 15 min if you are ready for your epidural yet.
I second that! Although I ultimately ended up getting the epidural, I went the length of the average labor (20 hours) without it and it was mostly because I had such a supportive doula. Also, I found that the key person to tell I was planning natural was the nurse. Whenever the annoying resident offered me anesthesia or pitocin or to break the water, she firmly told him to stop bugging me, that I had a labor plan. The nurse also helped me lobby the docor to be off the monitors and not hooked up to something (not always standard procedure) and to be allowed to have juices both of which helped alot!

I am thinking that I want to go the natural route as well. I'm afraid of the getting an epidural and just believe in my heart that I can do. Hopefully everything will go as planned.

I planned on this with my DS and it worked out that way. Thank god everything went exactly as I had prayed - the only difference being it was ALOT LOT more painful than I ever imagined - I had all back labor so maybe that had something to do with it.
That said, I plan to do it again this time (god willing) but ofcourse, whatever happens - happens and I am fully open to whatever is best for the health of my baby and myself.
Why did I want to do it this way - so many reasons. I'm generally an anti-drug/intervention person - the idea of the epi and the possible side effects actually scared me more than the pain of child birth Then, everything I learned in Lamaze about the epi's effects on me and the baby just solidified my desire.
If you do plan to go this route the number one piece of advice I would have is stay home as long as you possibly can - until the pain is so bad you can't move

I went in the first time saying I would try without it for as long as I could. But it depends on your labor. I thought I could labor at home for a while, but since my water broke my doctor wanted me to go to the hospital immediately and I was hooked up to an IV right away. I think if I had been able to move around and labor differently my experience would have been different.
The other thing that was not "typical" about my labor was my contractions from the beginning were 2 min apart. That means about 15-30 seconds recovery in between so I barely had time to breath. I took lamaze and they stressed how you always had more recovery time than contraction time but the nurses just said that's average, but not everyone. All I could do was gulp for air and then a new contraction hit. It was tough. After a few hours my body was shaking so hard and I couldn't make it stop. Its a lot of stress on your system, like working out for hours.
I labored like that for about 5 hours and then got the EPI and started pushing about 3 hours after that and had DS after 1 1/2 hours of pushing. For me the EPI was wonderful. It gave me a chance to relax and catch my breath and get ready to push when the time came. I've already been warned that next time things might go much faster for me so I don't know what I will do with  But in my case the EPI was definitely a positive experience.

Why or why not? As I get closer to the date I feel that I want to try to take this route, but everyone says the epi is a life saver!!! Any opinions or advice would be appreciated:)
I did not have a completely natural birth with either of my children. I did go to 10cm with one and 8 cm with another.
If you want to try natural child birth - go for it. Make sure that your DH or whomever else is going to be in the delivery room knows this and I would suggest coming up with a word or phase that mean you absolutely DO want the epi or pain medication. Like a safe word and not just you trying to get through a contraction. It can absolutely be done and I think the fear of the unknowns about childbirth is scarier then actual childbirth. I watch a Baby's Story and will be upset that I will never deliver another child so there is something to it.

i am scared of the needle but im also scared of the pain -
so my ob said one of 2 things will happen during labor -
your fear of the needle will be much smaller then the pain you are feeling and you wont care about the needle going in - or - your fear of the needle will be much greater then the pain you are feeling so you wont go for the epi
i guess its true -
the other ob in the practice said - the epi is there to help you, its like going for a root canal without being numbed- if you want to go that route fine, but 95% of our patients choose the epi.
- i have an open mind - but if im in pain im asking for the epi

I had considered it but I know my pain tolerance & know that I would never make it through. I would be a mess, thrashing & what not. I will labor at home though for as long as possible so I have the freedom to walk if I want. But once I am admitted to the hospital & get the go ahead, I am getting the epi.
I give a lot of ladies who do go natural with no meds a lot of credit!

I didnt get an epi until i was 8cms with my sencond and 9cms with my 3rd. with my 3rd it only numbed half my body so i felt half of it while pushing and all i kept thinking was thank god i cant feel all of this. the labor part i could get through but the actual birthing- was rough for me. i think its always nice to start labor with the mindset of going natural but with an open mind of using the aids that are there if you need them.

I'm really going to try to do it 100% med-free, but I'm open to getting an epi if I feel that I really need it. I'm just going to do the absolute best that I can.
In the meantime I've been trying to prepare myself by reading up on it, taking Bradley classes & talking to other moms who have done it and, like the pp, I also plan to labor at home for as long as I can.

I was hoping I could deliver my daughter without the aid of any drugs. I actually looked forward to it....
But, my water broke, and I wasn't having contractions, so I had to be given Pitocin which made the contractions stronger (which I could handle) and faster. The frequency of the contractions was messing with my ability to breathe, and I was getting light-headed so I got the epi. It was the best thing to do in the situation.
However, I look forward to being pregnant again one day and I will definitely try to go without meds of any kind next time again! I get a little sad when I hear about the pain of contractions because I never got to feel them (I'm weird though).

I just have to say I absolutely hate this analogy -- a root canal is nothing like giving birth. Giving birth is a normal, natural process, not a medical procedure like a root canal.
This kind of talk makes it sound like women who choose to go natural are just gluttons for punishment, choosing the "hard" way for the heck of it.
95% of their patients choose the epi because it is darn near impossible to go without it if you don't have a supportive medical team.

I had an epi last time (while not perfect), I'm glad I did it. I'm definitely going to ask for an epi again this time around. I want to be as pain free as I can so that I can save all my energy for pushing. I didn't regret my decision last time around and am going to do it again!

Ideally I would like to try it that way. I am not completely opposed to the drugs - but I want to go as long as possible w/o. I think in large part b/c I am afraid of stalling labor and ending up with a c-section.
And, because I am a stubborn brat and some people keep insisting I "have to take the drugs" (in fact the woman I work with has told me on no less then 10 occasions - "Take ANY and ALL drugs they offer you") and it really pisses me off that people are trying to tell me what I MUST do - it makes me want to go without even more (stupid reason, I am aware but it just adds to me wanting to do it without. )

First 2 pg's I labored at home for the majority of the time. I got to the hospital both times at around 5cm and my water broke. By the time they did the paper work, gave me IV, moved me into a room and asked me 50 million questions, I was ready to push.
Last pg, I was induced for medically reaosns. Boy oh boy, if I had not done it naturally before I would have gotten the epi. Honeslty ther eis no real reason not to have it unless your reason is personal. Mine reason is that I am terrified of anything going into my back. I have a history of back pain and I know what it's like to not walk. I wasn't going to risk the side effects no matter how acute they are.
Anyway, laboring the entire time in the hospital was the worst and it was a night and day experience from laboring in the comfort of my home. I made it w/o epi b/c I knew the unknown KWIM? I knew what to expect, b/c I've done it twice already.
My advice for those who don't want meds is to stay at home for as long as possible. I can't stress that enough b/c once you are in the hospital and hooked up to a million things, there is not much moving for you to do. You're basically stuck in a bed getting beat up by contractions. 
Be open minded to labor and whatever happens, happens! The end result is the most important!

Getting a root canal is NOT natural. I'd take a bullet in my foot before getting a root canal w/o medication.
