I am tired of always having to be a drill sergeant so I will gladly reward myself with the iphone as relief the two times a month I go out to eat.

I personally prefer to reward myself with a chocolate martini and let my DH color with the kids Chat Icon

First comes the iphone, THEN comes the margarita. Chat Icon

Depending on the strength of the margarita, maybe I'd loosen up about the iphone Chat Icon

I like talking to my kids at dinner. We have fun, we talk, we joke with each other. If they all had their faces shoved in an ipad, nook or whatever, we'd miss out on that. Even when they were all younger, we wouldn't have done it. They sit and talk to us when we're out, no electronic devices.

We don't go out often but we have used it while we are waiting for food They are playing educational games or using a coloring app. Most of the time we are playing with them. If they have five minutes to play the game by themselves while DH and I have a conversation, then great. iPads (and any toys, crayons, etc) are put away when the food arrives.

I think it depends on the age of the kid
My little guy is 2 and a half. When we are out at a restaurant, I bring books, stickers coloring books etc etc for him to play with When all else fails and/or it's close to bedtime and hes getting antsy, that's when I pull up YouTube in my phone and let him watch a few sesame street clips

If you're asking about an older (not special needs) kid, like 7+, then no, I don't think it's ok

This..... When all else fails, I take out the electronics.. My son is a non-eater and it is rare that we go out to eat...

ipads at the dinner table, what are your thoughts?

we have a special need son, and by looking at him you would never know, so yes i am all for it. if it keeps a meltdown from happening and him busy then go for it.

not every disability is visible to the naked eye, so i am not one to judge. he uses one at home to eat at the dinner table, anything to get my visually sensory ASD boy to eat, i will allow it.

Ditto. I know a lot of people with kids who give them the ipad, etc., family members included. Whatever works for you. Doesn't work for my family though.

I also think coloring is a bit different than an electronic device. IME kids are typically tuned out 100% when they are playing with something electronic.

My kids are equally tuned out whether they are coloring or playing on the iPad. My DD can be sitting at the table in our playroom coloring, while I call her name over and over again. She gets very engrossed in whatever she's doing (my DS too).

But for me when we are out, my DS HATES all of the sudden to be strapped into a high chair at a table. He can be quite disruptive in his tantrums (and he's a VERY well behaved kid), but he's 2... so if he can be distracted with crayons and paper or my iPad that does not have games on it... then so be it. I don't see any difference in keeping him occupied with paper and crayons or an iPad. It's the same thing IMO.

Not happening, don't care what others do. I don't even take the Ipad out. It stays at home.

Same for my DCs...they just zone out and I feel like they may as well be in the car or at home instead of the restaurant.
Our parenting style is to "be in the moment". Even at the ped's office, there's always something to engage our kids with - either the wallpaper border (count the squares you see), the tiles on the floor (count the colors you see, find the pattern), etc. When we're at a restaurant, I take it as a chance to show the kids how to behave in that setting. I tell them, "When you're not sure how to act, watch how a grown-up is acting and be like that. Look at how daddy/mommy and Grandma/Grandpa are acting -- do you see them running around and being silly? We can run around and be silly at the park or in the family room -- not at a restaurant" .
I have a gf who has yet to take her DCs to a grocery store because she thinks they're out of control -- her oldest is 6 and he's never gone grocery shopping with her. I've been taking my DCs shopping with me since the oldest was only weeks old. Yes, it's frustrating and time-consuming to bring a 2yo to the store, but if you engage him/her, they enjoy it and actually can learn from the experience -- "Please count five lemons for me and put them in the wagon" or "Do you see the milk we usually buy?" or "What number aisle should we use for check out today?" Everything can be a game, but it takes extra time and effort. I feel that if we don't expose our kids to different situations and teach them how to behave when they're little, they won't learn the expectations we're putting on them and it'll get more difficult to do later. Just like in church -- we go 1x a week for 50min....no phones, no juice cups, no Ipads. It's family time, sitting still, being quiet, and listening to someone else speaking and following directions/guidance from others. They're learning what's expected of them and then they're rewarded after we leave -- with a trip to the park or playing outside where they can be as loud and rambunctious (sp?) as they want to be.

Re: ipads at the dinner table, what are your thoughts?

Wow... Didn't realize the drama this thread would cause. I say... To each there own. As long as your child is loved and taught well.

For those that are totally against the iPad or iPhone at restaurants... What about airplanes? I know it's a different senerio and all, but just your thoughts how you keep them entertained on long flights.
Not to start drama either.
My DS 1 can't sit still at all. Gets antsy and gets anxiety with foods. Looking at him you wouldn't know he has developmental delays. DS 2 is fine without entertainment at restaurants. Food keeps his attention. Lol

Re: ipads at the dinner table, what are your thoughts?

thank you for the drama, way to kill an afertoon reading all that

I think of it like candy, would you give candy before dinner ... hmm.. not sure, why not if my 2y is having a fit and I'm determined to sit and enjoy myself, if there is no other way I can think of at the time, once in a while candy with dinner not a big deal

We try other things, and often make it, but I have backup apps on my phone just in case always, as I have a lolypop in my bag just in case. I've never had to use either, yet, but would never judge anyone that does.

We never use the Ipad at home during dinner, and we almost never go out with the kids. If we did take them out, I would let them use the Ipad. I wouldn't want them to get food all over it, but I don't see anything wrong with using it while you wait.

I also let them use a dvd player in the car. It's not a big deal to me.

yes you are correct, totally different scenario. Restaurants you can take the kid outside if needed to not disturb others. Airplanes... there are no escape routes in place. Chat Icon

In all seriousness, my son will play with stickers, color a lot, take out his trains and we put down all the food trays for him to use and make bridges from one to the other, we read books, he eats a ton and sometimes he'll watch something on the dvd player. But usually after one episode of something, he's done with it. He loves planes so he also will sit and stare out the window, ask about clouds, etc etc. We also play the ispy game and a lot of times, he takes a nap for a good amount of time.

Re: ipads at the dinner table, what are your thoughts?

I would do it, haven't needed to yet but if I did need to I would.

I think it is absurd when people judge others for different parenting styles.

The only parenting I judge are abusive and neglectful parents, other than that I don't care what others do, every kid is different I don't pretend to know the best way to parent any child but my own.

Re: ipads at the dinner table, what are your thoughts?

yes, all the time...I make sure we don't forget it! How does it bother anyone?? We just started taking ds out with us the past year (he's 5)..we never went out to restaurants in the past because he just wasn't able to sit still and we never enjoyed ourselves..so now he's entertained, we enjoy a night out with ds, and ds still interacts with us..win win for us!
