Infant Brochiolitis???? Sick baby but no fever to worry about ?

sorry if this is a repost.. now that Im back at work I can't keep up as much... but I try...

So I was emailing a friend/excoworker/client (confused yet) about AJ and she asked if AJ was sick. I said yes, but I had not called the doctor or worried too much because she had no fever. She was congested with occasional dry cough starting last Friday and the last two days its turned into super runny nose and a really wet nasty cough. I have an appt on the 23rd and figured I’d bring it up then. Otherwise, AJ eats very well and is still active.

She replied:
“There is a virus going around that results in a runny nose, no fever, but that can move to an infant's bronchial tubes resulting in brochiolitis. That is what my son has so keep an eye on it. Him too - very heavy running nose, congestion and a wet cough, no fever. The doc just gave him a steroid and an antibiotic because it is turning into an ear infection too”

(NOTE: her son is 7months old)

Has anyone heard of this?

Do you think with this info I should make a call to the Pedi?

My Son had bronchiolitis at 5 months. His cough was very wet and phelmy and he had no fever. Not sure if that helps.

But in a baby I would tend to call the ped fro any cough just to be safe.

I always call the ped when DD starts to cough. She is on an antibiotic for her cold. I would call just to be on the safe side.

My DS had something like that in October. It started with some congestion, mild coughing, not a runny nose but he was stuffy. We went to the DR on a saturday for an unrelated matter and hte dr listened said no biggie just a cold its not in his chest he had a mild fever 99.4. He got a shot that day, she said if he has a fever on monday give a call. Well monday, he was having a hard time breathing...it had settled in his chest.
That day he was put on steriods and a nebulizer....a few weeks later he had an ear infection.

I wouldn't rush to the dr because I know my dr wouldnt put DS on any meds for a simple cold. But I would watch your little one and try to take it easy.

Ds had this in October. We were sent home with Zithromax (spelling?) for 5 days, a nebulizer 3 times a day and a follow-up the following week.

DD is just getting over pnuemonia, it started out just the same as you(runny nose and slight cough) turned into crazy runny nose and really yucky cough. She only had a fever of 99. We were at the Dr's 3 times in a week and were told it was viral until I went back and she was weezy and very rumbly in her chest. We went for a chest x-ray and it was middle lobe pnemonia in both lungs and was a pretty bad case at that! DD is also 7 months.

DD had bronchiolitis and croup both caused by what the doctor suspects was RSV. She never had a fever and she was eating and in pretty good spirits, the two things that made me think it was just a cold. Turns out it was worse. She was given steroids and a nebulizer. I would call to be sure. You're better off catching it sooner than later.

any time DS has a cough I take him in for a chest check. He had bronchiolitis at 3 months old and was on the nebulizer - I never want to experience that again, so I always make sure to give steam showers, humidifiers, aspritaors and lots of back thumping so keep his lungs clear.
I would take her in to be checked

I have put a call into the Pediatricians and I’m waiting for a call back.

I do use the aspirator on her everyday because now she’s so runny but I’m also using Little Noses so its not too dry. She sneezes and it pours out of her nostrils. We set up a cool mist humidifier in our room when it was just ‘stuffiness’. We still give her baths but when it got cold we moved the tub into our tub since it’s the warmest room in the house (door is always closed so the heat builds up) and with her ickiness we started to keep the warm water running in the tub while we are there with her so there’s warm moist air. We also dry her now mostly in the bathroom before walking across the hall to her room for lotion and dressing because its warmer in the bathroom.

Her wet phlemy cough is pretty nasty. Sometimes she gets going so she can’t breath and you can hear her struggle. She wants to cry but she can’t so she coughs more. Finally she can breath so she cries a little until we soothe her. Poor baby.

Alright now I’m getting a bit concerned… not yet worried but not content.

My friend's son just had this and said he had a slight fever - this post is getting me thinking b/c my son has a bad cold (stuffy nose) but a dry cough, almost like he has a tickle in this throat, and no temperature. Maybe I should call the doctor...

Doc called back

Says there is something out there but its really hard to diagnosis from home and even a little difficult if we brought her in. And yes, its an infection with no fever.

She needs to breathe comfortably, Drink enough to keep hydrated, have constant or steady wet diapers, be alert and active.

Otherwise its almost impossible to do much for them.

If she’s truly struggling to breathe, bring her in for steroids or other assistance but really this just has to be played out.

If she had an ear infection she would start getting grumpy
If she had serious struggle with breathing she wouldn’t be sleeping enough, eating well and would be cranky.

So for now its just watch her carefully and keep doing what I’m doing. Since I have an appt on the 23rd she should be 100% by then, if not then obviously something else is the matter and we’ll go over it then.
