If you had Mastitis and were on antibiotics...

A week ago I got a bad case of mastitis. I had a fever over 103 and bad swelling. This was on my "good" boob. The one that actually produced. My other one hardly produces anything.

I was very sick for days and went on antibiotics. I pumped out the gross stuff from the infection for a couple of days. Then once I saw drops of milk again I fed the baby on me. He is almost 3 months old. I have been feeding him on me every 2-3 hours to try to build my supply back up but he gets angry because there is probably nothing there or a small amount. Now that I am done with antibiotics I will pump again tomorrow to confirm if anything is coming out. I have never been a strong producer and have had issues with DS's weight.

If you had Mastitis and used antibiotics did your milk come back? If so how long did it take to get back to what it was?

Did you stop Bfing for good or did you still try? I'm going back to work soon so if there is only a small amount or nothing then it might not be worth it. Thoughts?

If you were successful in getting your milk supply back up what did you do? I am drinking mother's milk tea, taking Fenugreek, and eating Steel Cut Oats. I have been doing those things to try and get my supply up on my other side for over a month but nothing has really helped.

Thanks for reading and your insight. I have no luck and am really frustrated.

I never had a good milk supply but I didn't notice a big difference when I had mastitis.. it dipped slightly but came right back. I was encouraged to feed DS while I was on the antibiotics to keep my supply up.

Ugh, mastitis was the WORST!

I have had mastitis once each time. I nursed through it and continued to nurse after it. The more you put baby to the breast the more you will produce. Sorry you are struggling :(

Nothing to add except to drink excessive amounts of water. I struggled with producing enough from time to time. Also you can try a few power pumping sessions and see if that gets things rolling.

I also had a mastitis when my son was 2 weeks old and I never had a good supply. Worst was I had to pump and dump while on antibiotics because I have a penicillin allergy. It sucked pumping and dumping but I kept it up. I was never able to really get my supply up. I did work with a lactation consultant which was helpful. I ended up just breastfeeing my son whatever was in there and give him formula most of the time. I kept that up until he was 12 weeks and went back to work. By then, my supply really dropped. It wasn't ideal but I preferred putting him to the breast instead of pumping out 2 oz out at a time and he was still getting some breastmilk.

Try water, oatmeal, and putting the baby to the breast as much as possible. Massaging the breast before pumping or feeding too was helpful. Good luck. And try a lactation consultant if you really want some extra help. I know it's hard!

Your best bet is to keep nursing and pumping as much as possible to help increase your supply. I frequently pump in the am right before DS is up and then he nurses about 15 minutes later. He is way more efficient than the pump so even though I pump until barely anything is coming out, just a few minutes later DS is still able to get what he needs.

You are right, it was the WORST. I felt like I had the flu plus a swollen boob. I pumped while the gross crap was coming out and put him back on me once it was gone. He is still getting angry on me. Uhhh so stressful

Not having a good supply is so frustrating! Thats great you stuck with it even though your supply wasn't good. I'm trying to do the same. I guess getting a little breast milk is better than nothing. I also rather put him on me than pumping. Pumping is more painful for me. I went to the lactation consultant twice when DS wasn't gaining and it wasn't too helpful. Basically I was doing everything right but my supply just isn't there. Next week DS is 3 months so at least I made it this far. Thanks for sharing!

I'm trying. I nurse every 2-3 hours. I never have enough for him though and he gets angry. Since the Mastitis its been worse. I feel bad when he gets frustrated. Thats great you can pump and then he can get some from you...that doesn't work for me. He sucks me dry. Thanks for sharing.

It is normal for production to be low during and after mastitis. Pump and nurse as much as you can and hydrate! Eat lots of steel cut oatmeal and fenugreek. It should come back!
