IBS-d anyone?

Hi everyone,

I've had IBS-d my whole life and have been able to manage my symptoms on my own. Then this past February I had another baby and I got a cdiff infection which has now made my IBS symptoms 1000 times worse. I've been to three GI drs and nobody has been able to really help me. I had one dr tell me to take an Immodium everyday and come back in two weeks to see him. I found that response unacceptable. How do you deal? This is causing me so much anxiety that at times I can't go out to work because I'm afraid of an attack.

Re: IBS-d anyone?

Nope, none of my drs has recommended an antibiotic. The one thing I take is Bentyl for the cramps. I've lost 65 pounds in 10 months because everything I eat goes right through me. Losing hope at this point.

I can't tolerate Align because it contains milk and I'm lactose intolerant as well. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Wow! Thanks for sharing! I'm on a Dairy Free diet and have need taking Align for years! I never knew. You can but Cuturelle, it us dairy free.

Where do you live? I work with Gastros, maybe I can suggest one.

Re: IBS-d anyone?

I have had ibs-d my whole life and also get c.diff very bad.
I will say that it took almost a year for me to stop having crazy symptoms. I relapsed a few times and I had really bad D forever.

I kept up Florostor on and off for a year. It does get better but, it takes time. I was frustrated with the dr.'s response also.

Florastor is amazing. It is the only one studied that has real results. It's a yeast based probiotic that works well with c. diff.

Also I used Dr. Serer in the old Massapequa general. She was good but, I think that young healthy people getting C.diff is so new. They just don't know how to handle it. THis community acquired strain is so so virulent and they are having trouble fighting. I was on vanco for MONTHS. every time I came off the symptoms returned. We had to try many different ways of pulse tapering to find one method that worked. She tried so many options with me. I was honestly ready to sign up for stool pills. SHe thought I was nuts but, I was that desperate.

I can't take Florastor because it contains lactose and I have a sensitivity. I feel like I will never get a little better. I can't eat because everything goes through me. I've lost so much weight and I'm missing so much work.

Re: IBS-d anyone?

This might sound like an odd question but did you have your gallbladder removed?

Re: IBS-d anyone?

Soooo sorry. I would suggest calling Dr. Sandra Layne in Jericho Tpk in Syosset. She is excellent.

I would ask her to check your gall bladder and do a colonoscopy. During colonoscopy they can check for a number of issues. There is a new treatment for C-Dif. It is a transplant, you can google it.

I would also go to an allergist to see if you have food allergies. Ask to be tested for Celiac Disease (gluten), dairy and all other foods.

As far as probiotics, Culturelle is dairy free.

Re: IBS-d anyone?

I would ask about colestid. I have very bad IBS-d and my husband has crohns and IBS. Every time I had bad diarrhea my gi would always prescribe colestid. It worked every time. My husband suffered for years with diarrhea, not one doctor could relieve him of it. He is a detective for NYPD. He never knew what he would encounter so he would eat only one meal a day when he came home at night, lost a ridiculous amount of weight, and started to get depressed from his quality of life (he is only 30). I knew about colestid from being in the medical field and from my experience with it. His GI finally put him on it. He started at the minimum dose and they said it could take weeks to work. The next day he was a new person. He has been on it for a few months now and is a new person. He calls it his miracle drug. I have to laugh because he now gets constipated sometimes! Colestid is really used for cholesterol. The off label use is diarrhea after you have your gallbladder out but it works when you have you gallbladder also. There are many names for the same medication. Questran/cholestyramine is powder that you mix. Colestid/ colestipol comes as a powder and tablet. I hope this helped and that you get some relief! Please FM is you have any questions!

Yes, having your gallbladder out really makes the D worse.
For the first year it was GOD awful. It has regulated since but I am still not right.
Very common after gallbladder removal because your liver just dumps the bile into your intestines now and it acts like a laxative.

Re: IBS-d anyone?

My MIL just got over a bout of C-diff. She used refrigerated time release probiotics from Whole Foods-I can get the name for you, but if you just go there and ask they should help you. You need to go holistic. Have you considered seeing a Naturopath?

Yes, I would appreciate if you could get the name of that probiotic for me. Thank you! I've never been to a Naturopath. Do you have anyone that you can recommend?
