I know it's been beat to death before..........
but does anyone else get sick to their stomach when they pay their mortgage/taxes each month here on LI?
Especially for a 1950's house the size of a stamp?
I'm just in one of those moods today. 
I know the grass is not necessarily greener elsewhere (could have a large house somewhere else but not be able to find work). It just makes me ill that we work so hard and have so little to show for it each month.
And it's still so hard to put a lot of $$$ away or make any kind of major improvements.

I feel your pain  Have you considered moving further out East where taxes are lower? Not sure where you live but I know it's a lot better out there. I'm in the Islip Area and taxes are nuts! You are not alone and totally justified in your feelings.

Yup, we just moved to Smithtown and I  every month when it comes time to pay. HOWEVER, I knew that going in and choose to move there because of the great neighborhood and schools. IMO you do get what you pay for.

Yes, I do. LI sucks.  It just feels like you can never get ahead and being upside down in my mortgage is a real PITA when there are home projects you want to do.
It is just so expensive to live here. My SIL's live in MD and what a difference in their lifestyle. They live in a nice area, big beautiful homes built only 10 or so years ago, and their mortgage and tax bill is a joke. The taxes weren't even a consideration when they bought a house because they are so low that is just didn't matter much.
I know some people can't make the same salaries outside of NY but for my DH he pretty much can so sometimes I can't figure out why we stay. Hmmm.........maybe it's the upside down mortgage. Stupid NY.

We are struggling to even make our payment each month. I tried to get a loan modification but just found out that we were not approved and I am so pisssed about it.
My DH is working his tail off to make things better for our family because my job is stagnant but I am thankful to have a job.
If we can't turn things around within a year we may have to move out of state.

My bro and SIL are visiting from upstate and we were talking mortgages and taxes.
Their mortgage payment is $650 a month, including all taxes.
Her dad's house (which is huge and has a good amount of land) was assessed recently as $2,400 for taxes for the year.

I hear ya! My mortgage is totally manageable because we put 20% down w3.875% rate. Our school tax is a huge burden on us. It stresses me out! We pay 4k twice a year. Writing out those 2 checks every year kills me  Especially because we are paying for nursery school for our kids. Once we have no nursery school bills, I hope it will be easier. We are in Nassau county
My dh can pretty much transfer anywhere but we are afraid to move away from here

It is not much lower out there either
ITA! We're in Stony Brook and at just under $9K/yr for taxes. Lower then some towns in Nassau but by no means a super bargain.

It's unreal. Even with star and grieving, it's really ridiculous. And my DH says when we have kids he wants them in catholic school! NO WAY! I'm paying for these schools, I want them in them.
MAYBE for high school - we'll see.

If it makes you feel better, I am upstate and the taxes are pretty bad here also.
Our house was relatively inexpensive (compared to LI standards anyway) but the taxes are $9K.
If we were to move one town over and a tiny bit better of a school district than where we are now we'd be looking at $16k in taxes on a house that was only $325k.
NYS is just ridiculous with their taxes, but their school system (including the SUNY system) is pretty great, and that is what keeps me here (for now).

Moving farther East is not an option now with DS.
My ILs live in Seaford and they are my childcare.
Also we don't know if we'd even break even on the mortgage just yet if we were to sell.
We owe just $300K and comps for our area can be lower!

What bothers me most is looking at houses online and seeing GORGEOUS PLACES for the same price as our house.
If you ever want to get depressed, check out the real estate prices anywhere outside of NY.

Our taxes are under 6k and I'm very thankful for that.
I can't afford for them to go up too much.
I feel like you just keep on getting less for your money here. Take a look at your property tax bill and you will see what a small portion goes to the county. It's the damm school taxes. Consolidating the districts would save taxpayer money but no one wants that.
Everybody complains about the rising taxes but no one wants to step up and do anything about it

Yes, my house is soooo small. I want to add on but it's probably cheaper to buy another house. I wish I would have waited another 2 years to buy.

Yup and every year because your house is larger with a pool or deck your going to pay big time for it.
Our taxes doubled from 8k-16k in 6 years
even though our property size is still tiny and its only us living in the house
