I just called for my genetic tests
and I tested "ambigous" for Tay Sachs . What does that mean? I'm so scared

As usual I only got to speak to the nurse. My father is Jewish, so it's on my side not my DH.

Well maybe I'm wrong but from what I read you only have to worry if both parents test positive and its a Jewish gene. Try not to worry - they are probably just trying to cover all bases.

That is correct. I am half Jewish. My husband is 100% Italian. I demanded to be tested for it but the doctors reassured me that no matter my test results we are not at risk because my husband is not Jewish. I would definitely call back demand that a doctor call you to put your mind at ease though.

someone at work just had a similar scare and once her non-jewish husband got tested everything was considered fine.
i love the lack of information provided by offices that send people into panic mode. i wish they would do a better job at explaining things!

charly did you test for a bunch of others as well?
I know I have tested for tay-sachs before so I dont need that again but there are a bunch of new tests my doctor wanted me to test for..
I would put a call into my doc to explain what they meant. I also wouldnt worry to much since DH is not jewish.

DH and I are both jewish. I tested positive for Cystic Fibrosis. My dr. had DH tested and he was fine.
Im not sure if CF is the same as tay sachs, but both parents needed to be carriers for the risk to be increased.
For peace of mind, call your Dr. and have everything explained to you.

I did a little online research and pparently Tay Sachs occurs 1 in 27 for Jews and 1 in 50 for Irish. My DH is 50/50 Lithuanian and Irish. SO the numbers are bit scary. It will be a long 3 weeks until my DH gets tested and gets the results back.
I think doggielover is just a carrier - you need both parents to test positive to actually have the disorder.

yes.. i have the pamphlet on it from the hospital.. 1 in 30 is the carrier risk but 1 in 3,600 for the disease itself.

no, it means I'm a carrier. My mother's first cousin had it. So my mother probably passed the gene onto me. However, in 1975 (when I was born) they didnt have all of these tests so my mother never knew she was a carrier.
After I found out I was a carrier, my Dr sent me and DH to see a genetic counselor to explain EVERYTHING to us.
Basically, if DH had also been a carrier, the risk for us having a child is 1 in 4. (Keep in mind that my mom's cousin also had 2 siblings who were perfectly healthy.) Because DH is not a carrier, the genetic counselor told us our risk went back down to a couple who did not have any detectable genes.
Had DH been a carrier, I would have opted to have an amnio to be sure everything was ok.
Please try to stay calm, I know its easier said than done, but the odds are in your favor right now.
