I have to write a speech

I am so not good at these things... My sister is getting married tomorrow. The thought of having to stand up in front of 165 people and make a speech scares the life out of me! I know I should speak from the heart but I am so nervous.

The best speeches I have heard have a very similar format:

Introduce yourself (For those of you who don't know me, I am Hollie, sister of ___

Brief funny story about sister
Brief sweet story of the couple
And a best wishes for the future.


One of the sweeter things I've heard was when her MOH/friend recalled her coming home from their first date & how she couldn't stop smiling. And then said "And today you have the same smile as you had after that first date."

Funny story was when the best man said he knew it was love because the groom went with the bride to get a mani/pedi (and used those words).

You'll do terrific - just look at your sister when you're talking. Because the speech is really for her.

i agree...have a drink or two before and you willbe fine

of course looking down at a written speech as opposed to speaking from the heart might be better

for my wedding, iwas going to picture everyone naked. as it turned out, i had no voice. i said the vows to dh. then moh read them so everyone could hear them

I've found that speeches at weddings can be quick and to the point or long and personal. When I made a speech for my bestfriend, I didn't plan anything. I had a general idea of what I wanted to say, and didn't want it to sound "scripted." It worked out fine even though I cried and cried. She knew I meant it from the heart and that was what mattered.

I am sure that whatever you say, you're sister will love, and don't worry about nerves because people won't remember that in the long run, they'll just remember the kind words you said for your sister and her new husband.

I am so glad you started this thread. I am also giving a speech at my brothers wedding and am very nervous! All the above seems like great advice that I am going to take with me too. Thank You and Good Luck! Please update us and let us know how it all went!

Holly - I need to give a speech too. I'm not sure what to say. Can you send me what you wrote so I can copy it?

I have given a few speeches, the biggest audience being 15,000. The best advice I can give you is to speak to your subject, just as if it were the two of you. It will relax you, but it will also make it seem more sincere.
