So we're buying a 1921 Colonial and I would LOVE to find out who the original owners of the house were. Our realtor told us that the house was probably originally built by someone who was well-off, judging by the size/layout/finishes in the house. So of course that peaked my interest. Plus, I just think it would be cool to know the history.

I don't live in New York, but I'm still hoping maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

Real property laws vary by state but if I were trying to find out, the first thing I would do would be to type "chain of title real property [COUNTY NAME] in google and see what comes up. As a general matter you should be able to get the chain of title from whatever office does the deeds. Your title insurance company will also have that info, but you may not want to wait.

I am obsessed with doing this lol! We have rented a lot of old houses and as someone with a history degree...I love checking out old census records for info on previous owners. I can do this for you if you want.
