Without going into all the details we use a babyistter and my dd goes to school up the block from her for now in Nursery and will go next year for Pre-k but I wanted her to go to school near us( wheerever it is we move by then) for Kindergarten BUT then I was thinking my son will be in nursery and it may be easier to keep them both in that school near the sitters. How imprtant is it do you think? Is it hard for kids to adjust in1st grade not knowing anyone?

Not vital but there is no doubt in my neighborhood that a lot of friendships are formed in pre-school & Kindergarten & it makes the transition easier.

I went to a different kindergarten than first grade. I do remember my first day of first grade was difficult to transition to, but I was just fine Chat Icon Kids are so much more adaptable than we give them credit for!

I think it depends on the kid.

My friend's son is very outgoing and had no problem when he started at the local public school in 1st grade. He'd gone to a private school starting at age 2 - kindergarten since their district was 1/2 kindy at the time.

I think my dd would have a hard time with it, but she's not good with change in general so for her it would probably be more that it's a different school, not so much the other kids.

Personally, I think its important because so many friendships are forged in kindergarten. Getting thrown into "big kid school" together bonds the kids I think.

JMO though.

I went to one school for kindergarten, a different one for first grade and then a different one for second grade...

It's not the best way to make lasting friendships, but it does make for a more adaptable person.

I don't think a different kindergarten is THAT big of a deal but if you can avoid it without too much difficulty I would.

No problem.... I went to a private prek/k and went to public school from 1st on. I think it's more important once you start regular elementary to stay in the same school.

This may be a stupid question, but are you planning on doing private kindergarten then? Because if not, she may have to go to the school closer to youChat Icon

I don't think it's too important only b/c a lot of pple are putting their children in daycare kindergartens since they need a full time school then they're going to their own school district for 1st

Not at all, I did not go to kindergarten at the same school where I went to 1st grade and beyond.

I was painfully shy too and had no trouble adjusting. I think its bc they are so young then....they havent formed really tight cliques yet.

I don't think it's that important. DS has only 2 or 3 kids from his Kindergarten class in his 1st grade class, so there aren't a lot of friendships carried over from the previous year.

Exactly my situation too.

My older DD went to nursery school at a different school from where she's currently in pre-k. I find the mom cliques are harder to break into than the kid cliques. Chat Icon

Actually totally opposite in my school. Moms of my daughter's friends are very outgoing. The kids on the other hand are a tough crowd.

DS is currently enrolled in a catholic nursery school that goes up to Kindergarden. When I put him in the school last year I didn't think anything of the location because it is 3 miles from my house BUT a different town. I am on the border. A lot of the mom's do not send their children to the kindergarden at this school because it is a expensive ($525 a month Chat Icon ). DS will be going next year and that is his last year there and then kindergarden in our district. I am sad because he has made friends and I became friends with the moms. I actually asked DH if he would move just so DS could continue on with his friends.
I know my DS will be fine and make new friends but their is still a part of me that is sad.

Re: How important do you think it is for kids to go to KIndergarten where they will go to grades 1 and up?

Our neighborhood Catholic school did not have kindergarden, so we went to public school, then in 1st grade transferred over.

I am okay with kids switching schools and moving. I think its a good thing to be slightly shaken out of your comfort zone. Its a life lesson.

My family moved around a bit. We all played sports, all in honors classes, all graduated with scholarships. No one had any problems with friends.

Actually, my sister was married in Yosemite a few years back, The guest list was incredible. Her kindergarden 2 friends from Seattle, then her best friend and her parents from FL, high school friends and her English teacher from NY, and college friends from Boston.

Since she studied abroad and spent her summers working in camps, she had atleast 7 people who came internationally.
