I personally think the earlier the better. My kids are still young and wake up so early. By the time we leave for school my kids have been up for hours (our district starts at 9:20). That being said, I think anything before 8am is too early. Ideally, I wish our district started at 8:20

I wouldn't like any earlier than 8. My kids get up around 7:30, sometimes i'm dragging my 1st grader out of bed at 8, their school starts at 9. On the other hand, when i'm back to work they'll be in before care by 7. Two hours before school even starts would suck.

definitely before 8 is too early. my 2nd grader starts school at 8:45- we live close, and his bus comes at like 8:25/8:30. for me, its perfect because he can sleep in until almost 8, so i don't feel like im dragging him out of bed in the mornings LOL

9 should be the earliest for the elementary school kids. My oldest goes to middle and starts at 7:57. Wish it was a touch later, but she manages

Re: How early is too early to start the day- elementary school ?

My commute is long to the office so I like early time. I say anything before 7:15 is too early.

My DS's school doors open at 7:50 and they start at 8:20am. I drop him off at 7:50 on the dot or 7:30am at before care.

9am start would have me getting to work after 10am which means I would be at work till like 6 or 7.

ETA: These times are so I could never.. I guess DS isn't leaving Catholic school until he can walk to school himself. lol.

My DS starts at 8:30 (doors at 8:20) and I love it - just enough time to wake up and get going.

This! Although I think it starts at 8:20.
I love it. My kids are fine in the morning. THey get up around 6:45, get dressed and come down for breakfast, get some time to decompress and watch TV while I get lunches ready and then they go to the bus stop across the street and get picked up around 8:05 (give or take a minute or two).
School starts at 8:20

My boys are in 4th and 2nd grades.

Doors open at 8; classes start at 815. Thats early enough for us.

Any later would not work for us. I can drop them off at school every morning and then commute into midtown for work. I am fortunate that I can stroll in at 930 without anyone saying anything about it. If school started later, I would have to pay for before school care.

Re: How early is too early to start the day- elementary school ?

Our elementary school starts at 9:10am with doors opening at 8:50am.

Since I have to be at work by 8:30am, my DD is dropped off at before care by 8am.

If school started at 8:20am or 8:30am, then I wouldn't have to pay for before care.

But I do think that any time before 8am is too early for Elementary School.

My son starts at 9:20 am. Doors open at 9:00 am. The bus picks him up at 9:00am. I would love for him to start earlier, but we have staggered start times for our elementary due to the buses. If we lived north of Sunrise Highway, he'd start school at 8:25 am.

Growing up, my elementary started at 8:15am. I lived in the country, so a lot of the kids got on the bus around 7am or even a little earlier. I was the last pick up on the route, so my bus came at 7:45am. It made sense to me that we started that early, people could get their kids on the bus and get to work. Also, our entire district was on basically the same schedule, e.g., high school started at 8:30am and used the same buses, so if a parent needed to leave earlier, they could have a high school student watch their elementary aged kid.

When my son goes to kindergarten, my district here starts at 9:30, which drive me nuts. So we'll need before care, because we both need to be at work before than. I wish it just started a little earlier, because we both work locally, so if it was 8:45 or something, we could work it out.

We start at 8:50 and are barely making it. I do not have morning kids, nor am I a morning person.

I think the start time is fine though. I don't know how we are going to deal with earlier start for middle school Chat Icon

We start at 830 now and next year it's going to 8 am.
Which means she will have to be at the bus stop by 730.
And we are not morning people either and it's a battle as it is.
I'm dreading it.

We start at 9:20 and end at 3:40. I don't mind the late start but I hate how late they get out. By the time the kids get off the bus it's around 4:15 and most of the after school activities have already started or start soon after and we are always rushing. My daughter is up at 6:30 every day so I would personally love an earlier start.

I can’t believe how late these schools start. Is there before care for the ones that start after 9?

That’s crazy, I would get to work after 11am. I can’t believe some schools start so late. Anything after 8:30 seems insane to me.

If my son had that schedule he’d be in before and aftercare for like 5-6 hrs a day.

Yeah she’s in the after care too from 3:45 until I get her at about 5:15. Next year the school changes and those hours are from 9:15-3.15.

My district elementary (LI) starts at 9:20. It's kind of hard because by the time school lets out, he doesn't get home until almost 4.

My work elementary starts at 8 (NYC)

I wouldnt want to go in earlier than 8 or get out later than 3. For those who go in so late, you must not get home til like 4-430 and still have to do HW, dinner, activities, Baths. Seems ridiculous!

When my son was in aftercare he was there until 6, lol. You make it work

To answer the question, when my son was in elementary they opened the doors at 7:50 a.m. and school started at 8:25 a.m. (we are in the city so there is free breakfast)

Now he is in JHS, doors open at 7:30 a.m.. They have free breakfast and read for 10 minutes from 7:50-8:00 a.m.
