How do I get DH to throw out useless obsolete stuff?

Back in May when my IL's moved back to Poland, DH took a lot of stuff and brought it hereChat Icon Now that we have a baby on the way in February, we really need to reorganize and make room.

How can I convince my DH to throw out some of the obsolete technology he has piled in the home office? He and his brother worked for Radio Shack during college and he has a lot of useless crap. Do you know anybody who wants three 100-disc CD changers? No ! Everybody has Mp3 players.

He needs to get rid of stuff but can't bear to part with it because he knows that at one point he spent a lot of money on it.

Oh yeah, no one on Ebay wants the stuff.

This is a tough one. I wish I could just dump it all, but it is too heavy for me to bring to the trash.

And the funny thing is that I always thought that guys would stick together but DH's best friends have both told him to throw the stuff out.

I feel your pain. My brother lives with my disabled Dad and is a slob and a pack rat. He must have four 10 year old computers in the basementChat Icon
I'm ultimately responsible for the care of my father's house and I am the opposite of a pack-rat... I love to pitch things.

If I wasn't preggos this summer I swore I was hiring a small dumpster (while my brother was away on vacation) and dumping all of the garbage that he just stores in the house.

He's 33 years old and got mad at me 3 years ago for throwing out his pee-wee hockey equipmentChat Icon Chat Icon

I would ask him about a couple of specific things a week or every two weeks, then lay low for a few weeks and ask about some more of it.

I stopped trying a loooooong time ago.
If its seasonal it goes in the basement. If he hasnt used it in a year..

Here's what I do.

1. give it away on freecycle.

2. sell it on craigslist or ligaragesale etc - and put the money on his side table - pleasant surpise.

3.if its too heavy I ask the landscapers to take it out for me - tip of course.

4.im not sure dump it in the shed

Trust me there are many a times Ive called my inlaws and joked about nice knowing them - cause he usually flips when he gets home and realizes something is gone Chat Icon

I would throw a tag sale... people really do buy a lot of this stuff... and he can make some money off of it too-so he doesnt feel like its being thrown away

Anything leftover gets either donated...or I guess you can take the time and sell it on ebay ...leftovers-get thrown away

If its small not expensive items...gradually you can throw away one-then two- he'll never knowChat Icon

How about, BOX it all and put it in the attic-label it-at least it is out of the way

Its pretty easy....while he is at work.

Get a garbage bag and put it outside or in the trash room..wherever your trash goes. When he asks a month to six months later where something is, say "I dunno".Chat Icon
