Has anyone ever bought someone's DVC points?

Someone I know has points they aren't using and I wondered if it's something worth using for our next time down.

She has 800 points, $10 a point at the Sartoga Springs Resort.

Any advice would be great!!!

ETA: no....I don't need to buy all 800.

Just make sure the 800 points is enough to cover your stay. I don't know how many points it takes for a week long vacation but if it is all 800 I feel like $8000 is a lot of money for one week.

I priced out renting DVC points for 5 nights two bedroom suite at Sartoga Springs and it was about 190 points (in June). So theres no way you will need all 800!

Does your friend have a particular time they need to use them by?

800 points is A LOT! Here's an idea of what 800 points will get you:

The week of 12/24-12/31 at the new Grand Floridian DVC in a 3 BEDROOM unit with a lake view- 752 points.

Points vary from season to season, size of room and resort. We just spent 6 nights at Bay Lake in a lake view studio for 129 points.

We also stayed in the same room in October (for food and wine) for 6 nights and that stay was 106 points.

Also, you are not locked into staying at Saratoga Springs just because it's her home resort.

Re: Has anyone ever bought someone's DVC points?

Sorry.....I should have specified that I don't need to buy all 800.

We were thinking of doing 5 nights, 4 days in the parks.

Not sure if we want to do Feb (right before presidents week), late March (right before spring break) Late Oct, or anytime around Christmas break. (trying to figure which would be better)

And if it'll cost more in tickets too.

Tickets will be the same price. There is no "free dining" with DVC stays, nor is there daily housekeeping. You can still purchase the meal plan and use magic express and everything else that Disney offers. There is no seasonal surcharge for the meal plan for DVC stays.

We have rented points from a DVC owner and stayed at Saratoga Springs in a 1 bedroom. Works out great, except no housekeeping. $10 is a great deal. Not sure how old your child is, but that particular room setup at that resort isn't kid friendly. There is no door to the jacuzzi tub area (it's in the bedroom), and my daughter kept turning on the faucet to the tub.

Here is a calculator that tells you how many points you need for each resort.

Oh great! She looked up one set of dates, but I don't want to keep bothering her. For Feb was just under $1700 for a one bedroom.

But still need tickets. I love the idea of a bigger room for the 4 of us (PRIVACY!). But not sure if it'll be cheaper?

It's cheaper than booking that particular room directly through Disney. But likely not cheaper than staying in a regular room at say a moderate or value with a code.

That's what I'm wondering...we really want to get down next year, dont want to go too basic, but know we can't go too high either.

Re: Has anyone ever bought someone's DVC points?

I rented points to stay at the Boardwalk in February and it was about the same price as a slightly discounted moderate.

Another thing to remember is that when you rent points there are no additional taxes; the price you are quoted is the final price.

I was SO glad we ended up going that route.

$10 a point is a fabulous deal. Most places to rent points are $12-13, some try to ask for a lot more than that.

Are you definitely looking at saratoga springs or trying for another dvc place?

You should get trip insurance. Not sure what your friend will allow since you have a relationship. With point you use it or lose them. When you rent elsewhere you cannot cancel. I think there is a small window of wiggle room to rebook before the trip but there might not be availability so they might lose the points. Something to think about. That was one of the things that holds us back from booking this way. Afraid the kids will get sick and we will lose out.

Did you stay in a studio or a one bedroom? A studio is usually the same price, or sometimes less, but unfortunately a one bedroom (like the OP is looking for), does not compare in terms of price. It's usually double the points for that room style.

This exactly. We looked into it for our last trip but I was afraid to pull the trigger because we couldn't cancel. I started looking into travel insurance but I was having trouble finding a policy that would cover this type of reservation.

Yes, a studio. I didn't see that the OP wanted a one bedroom. Yes, it's about double the points. Much less affordable!

A studio was fine for the four of us but to each their own.

Regarding the other post about travel insurance, Travelguard covers these trips.

Thanks for the info about the travel insurance. I didn't think a regular policy would cover this type of reservation.

Just make sure the policy covers this type of private exchange bc you are booking through disney you are paying another person (your friend privately) to book it. Insuremytrip is a great site but not all policies will cover this I would guess. David's rentals does suggest insurance not sure if the policy that covers that would work for you bc with that you are booking through a 3rd party or broker. If you figure it out let me know bc I would be interested. Maybe ask Jennifer on here bc she owns dvc and I think rents her points out. She might know a specific policy that would work. Btw to waive pre existing conditions it usually has to be purchased with 10 or so days of 1st deposit/original booking. So find a policy before making a contract with your friend. Please put it in writing to help both of you. I think several dvc rentals have sample ones. Will just protect you and them if there is a problem.

Re: Has anyone ever bought someone's DVC points?

Good tips!

I'm not sure if we'll even do it. While the thought of a nice big room is wonderful, so us parents can enjoy the vacation too...it might be more economical to do a moderate hotel.
I really want to make Disney in 2014

DVC owners can get trip insurance through the DVC. I never take the insurance, but I believe you would be covered if your friend takes it out for you when she books the trip. I don't have any experience with insurance and the DVC so I'm not exactly sure.

I'm sure member services would explain it to your friend if she asked.

Re: Has anyone ever bought someone's DVC points?

I'm not sure why anyone would have trouble finding a policy that would cover this. The insurance is to reimburse you the loss of prepaid expenses in the event something happens on YOUR end - illness, a death in the family, weather delays, etc. You aren't any more likely to get sick or have a death in the family because you rented DVC versus taking a cruise. So from the insurer's standpoint, it's no different than any other trip that is paid in full in advance.

The owner backing out of the agreement is a separate issue. No insurer will cover that; they'd be crazy to. If you go through a rental company like David's or dvcrentals they reimburse you 100% if the owner screws you over. (Yes, you're still out a place to stay, which is why I kept my Marriott reservation as a backup; we had until 6 pm the night of check in to cancel.)

If you just do a private contract and don't go through a rental company and the owner screws you over by using the points you are out of luck. I guess you could take them to court. This is why I would never do it that way. Of course if you know and trust the person that's different - and awesome!

Re: Has anyone ever bought someone's DVC points?

Yes....this is a person I know.

I guess I'll need to do my homework & see if a resort through Disney is better. (for some reason I'm intimidated with searching for prices, always seems you have to know the deals, time of year, etc in order to get the best value)
