Handing in license plates at DMV--separate line?
I want to go to a DMV in Suffolk tomorrow to hand in my old license plates. I would like to go to Hauppauge or Port Jeff, but does anyone know if those DMVs have a separate line for handing in plates? I don't want to wait hours at Hauppauge just to hand them in.

I think so- I turned in my Dad's plates last year and I don't think I waited very long

I just did that...I went to the one in Medford on 112. I waited on the Info line...got a number and waited about 5 mins to get called to a window. They didnt have a sperate window just for turning in plates but it was pretty fast process

The crazy thing is that my insurance is charging me for an additional car until I turn them in, so I want to do it as soon as I can. I am getting a new car tonight  so I want to hand in the plates for the old one tomorrow.

When you check in at DMV - they give you a letter and number based on the type of transaction you are doing - so you get called really quickly when you are returning plates!

It might be a bit of a trip, but I just did this last week at the Riverhead office, and I was in and out in under 7 minutes! SOOO easy

Not sure if it still helps, but I remeber when I was there once, the info line was pretty long and they called people turning in plates off the line to hand them in. No need to wait.

I should update--I went to the Port Jeff DMV, and was there less than 5 minutes! That is the best DMV ever! Very organized and never a long wait.
AND my new license plate starts with my married initials! how's that for luck!

I went to the one across from Lowes(Centereach maybe ) and it took me all of 5 minutes. There is a seperate window that only handles turn in plates so it goes quick.

no seperate line, but you get a # and those #'s usually come up quicker IMO. the dealership where your getting your new car won't take them and turn them if for you?
