Got a little freaked at yesterday's OB appt

I've been pretty "calm" during the entire pregnancy (I'm 33 weeks w/twins) - until yesterday.

I had my u/s with growth and bio-physical scan (alternative to a NST) to just make sure the babies are moving as they should -- everything was great.

Headed to the OB after, and my blood pressure was slightly elevated (130/80) -- I've been seen her for two years and I've always stayed at 120/80. I've had some extreme swelling in my feet & hands -- hands/fingers are definitely numb and tingly.

I see my OB every two weeks - and from the last appointment, I've gained 7 lbs...but she states it's all water retention, especially at this point of the pregnancy. While I freaked more about the weight gain - since it was advised I don't gain more than 10-15 lbs overall (lost close to 14 in the first trimester), she told me to have my BP taken at the next u/s appointment (next Wednesday) and if it was 130-140+ then I would have to give her a ring and she would send me to L&D.

I know it's crazy, but I pretty much shutdown at that point (mentally.) I'm really trying to keep these two as long as possible, but moreso b/c we're closing on our house this week and renovating and anticipating a move by March 10!

I don't have my hospital bag packed, we don't have the nursery setup (the furniture isn't being delivered until 3/11) - and I feel completely overwhelmed for the first time!!!!

Anyone have a similar experience???? Any advice? Maybe eliminate sodium/salt as much as possible and try to keep my BP as low as possible??!?!

Re: Got a little freaked at yesterday's OB appt

My BP is typically very low, so when it goes up, its not so bad, but I am typically 100/70 or something like that. But one week I gained 5 lbs and it was more like 120/80. In my case its fine because its so low to begin with, but I had one week with lots of swelling and a higher BP. I gained 5 lbs in a week. The next week, I tried to be more active, skipped really salty stuff, rested more, and I turned down the heat a lot at night so my hands would swell less. It must have helped because the next two weeks I only gained half a lb.

Re: Got a little freaked at yesterday's OB appt

I delivered 6 weeks early due to pre-eclampsia / high blood pressure. The only symptom I had leading up to it was major swelling, but my BP was fine at all of my appointments. One night I started having difficulty breathing and was having chest pains and turns out it was pre-eclampsia and I had to deliver to cure it. Monitor your BP closely, avoid salty foods, drink LOTS of water, sit with your legs/feet elevated and try taking epsom salt baths. If you start having any types of chest pains, call your doc immediately.

Don't worry about the weight gain, it most likely is just water. I lost 35 pounds within the first two weeks of having my DD because it was ALL water. Take things easy, and get help from family/friends around the house and with anything you need. Good luck!

I would eliminate sodium as much as possible and increase your water intake. Increasing fluids often helps reduce fluid retention. Pack your hospital bag and find out from your attorney if your mortgage company will allow you to have a power of attorney giving your lawyer permission to sign for you at closing if necessary.

My bp has been high the entire pregnancy but I think I generally have high bp. My Ob says as long as its not over 140/90 then I shouldnt be concerned. I average 135/85 pretty much the entire time. I have to drink lots of water and lay on my left side to keep it in my "normal" range. I have had no other symptoms like swelling, chest pains or blurry vision. I would invest in a home bp machine to monitor it yourself and try to stay as hydrated as possible.

Thanks so much -- I had a feeling she was trying to not "indicate" PRE-E...but I had read of the warning signs.

Thanks so much!!!

This was me. From mid second tri on it was slightly elevated. Never more than 140/80 or 90 tops.
No other symptoms. I did have some bad swelling in my ankles and feet- but the Dr wasn't concerned with that.
Did a 24 hour urine test and no protein in urine.
They attributed it to the pregnancy and the extra fluid, blood flow.
I did go on a low dose med and was monitored more closely.
But in the end all was well, I delivered a day before my due date with no complications and a very healthy baby.
And my BP went back to normal the minute she was out of my body and hasn't gone back up since.

Did you tell your doctor about all of these extra stressors when you were with her? Those could ABSOLUTELY be a big cause as to why you are experiencing an elevated BP. closing on a house is extraordinarily stressful, I know my BP (and I wasn't preggo) was hitting 170/90 during the few weeks before our closing (and I'm normally around 125/80).

Got a little freaked at yesterday's OB appt

I had 130/70 BP on average before I got pg. At my first prenatal appt. It was 150/90. I was put on 100mg of Labetalol 2x a day. Since then, it has consistently been 130/80 or better, which the doctors have been so happy about. Yesterday at my appt, it was 144/108 and I gained about 4lbs in 10 days. I was sent to L&D to be monitored just in case it was preeclampsia. The highest it was in the hospital was 138/88 and went down as low as 110/56. After a few tests and 3 hours of BP checks every 10-15 mins, I was sent home. I had no other symptoms.

While it was a little nervewracking thinking that if I did have preeclampsia that I would have ended up being induced yesterday and possibly by now, she would have been born, I was actually pretty calm. DH on the other hand.... lol.

Crashing, but just wanted to say that newborns need very little. Even though it would be nice to have all your furniture put together, and have a nursery set up (and be in your house!), it isn't really necessary. My kids didn't even have cribs until they were 3 or 4 months old. :)

Hope you feel better, and can keep your BP low! GL! Chat Icon

Got a little freaked at yesterday's OB appt

Just to calm some fears (hopefully). We did the final walkthrough on our house on Thurs, had DS on Fri, DH moved us in Sat and Sun, d/c Sun and went to my parents, Mon went home for the first time with DS. We had NOTHING ready. We threw together the rock n play, while he napped in the car seat. It was more stressful for me because I felt like crap that he was coming home to a house of boxes. He didn't care about that. His nursery wasn't set up for about 4 weeks. He didn't care about that either. Even if they come tomorrow (I hope they don't) everything will be OK!!!!

This helped a lot -- thank you so much -- it seems like the doctor missed the point of telling me that if she did send me to L&D it was to monitor me! Wish she would've said that instead of just leaving it "wide open" whereas I thought that was it - they're taking them out!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

No problem! He did tell me to go home to get my hospital bag "just in case" but it was obviously not needed lol.

Got a little freaked at yesterday's OB appt

Aww try and stay calm but I know easier said than done.
We might be closing on our house very close to my due date and I'm a nervous wreck too. This week I said I started to feel extremely anxious bc I hate being in such limbo. It's not me and not my personality at all. Hang in there
