Re: Going to look for a dog

I just called little shelter and she was telling me about a guy that called in because he wanted to give up his dog. I just spoke to the guy and he is sending me a picture of his chi.

The dog is male, unneutered, under 8lbs, great with kids and really loveable

Re: Going to look for a dog

He sent me pics in Acrobat - how do you get them out of there so I can post them on here?

He is adorable

White body - brown - black and white head

I think he is a chi - mixed with a rat terrier

I agree wholeheartedly!! We got our dog from there. We wanted a puppy, but ended up with an adult dog...this was the BEST decision we ever made! She was house broken and we fell in love with her. At first we were unsure about getting her, but I had a great gut feeling about our Dixie. Chat Icon
Two years later, DH & I cannot picture life without her. Good Luck!

Re: Going to look for a dog

The guy said he only did it once and then he yelled at him and the dog never did it again.

You saw the pics.....What do you think I should do?

This is where we went yesterday:

We went to NSAL yesterday, and didnt see anything we were interested in.

Then we went to the shelter a few blocks from there and the dogs looked sickly.

Then we went to another shelter. We never ever went there and they had a lot more dogs then bide a wee does. They had one dog we were interested in. A black Chihuahua. We took him into the room and he was very calm, very cute. He was either 8 or 9 years old. We are very concerned with adopting an older dog though. He had cataracts which is not a big thing. We were just concerned we would only have the dog for around 3 years. He was a stray.....so cute, so calm.

After there we went to Bide A wee. They had 3 of the cutest little kittens, but they werent ready for adoption. Danielle is afraid the cat with shred our nice microfiber couches in pieces so we are not getting a cat.

And finally we went to Shake a paw . We saw many cute dogs, many expensive dogs. Until finally I saw a Paillion. He was white and brown, very loveable.....and on sale too. After being there for 2 hours and driving the sales lady crazy, we did not get him. I would of bought him, but Danielle didnt want to spend $700 on him....So I was sad.

I never called the guy back that has the 5 year old not neutered male chihuahua, but I will have to do that today. The dog lookes adorable from the pics I have of him. If anyone wants to see him, send me an fm with your email address and I will send the pics to you. The pics are in Adobe Acrabat. That is why I cannot post them.

He wass basically just going to give us his dog. He cannot keep him because his new roomate has a tea cup yorkie that isnt spayed. So its either him or the dog that has to find a new place to live.

What would you do? Should we keep looking?

How cute!!!!

I started looking for my dog by searching www.petfinder.com.

There are so many shelters that it helped narrow down where I wanted to go. Also, for me, I wanted to adopt from a municipal shelter since they are kill shelters. That was very important to me.

What about Little Shelter and Animal Haven in Flushing, NY.

Good luck,

Why can;t he get the dog neutered?? Honestly, people are very naive and lazy sometimes. Please take the dog, he sounds like he doesn't care for his dog.

If you do take it, please have the dog neutered and vaccinated.

The other thing is, Danielle says we are better off with a female, because she is afraid the male dog will spray...Is that true? Does he spray if he is Neutered?

I have had two male dogs...one we adopted when he was about 2 years old and one we got as a puppy. Both of them were unaltered so I had to have them neutered. I didn't have any spraying problems with either of them.

As far as shelters, Save a Pet in Pt. Jeff, Little Shetler in East Northport, Northport Muni Shelter (LAP Dogs), Smithtown Shelter and Brookhaven.

Good luck!

Re: Going to look for a dog

Scott, I HIGHLY reccommend you take a drive out to Port Jeff and check out save-a-pet. They have the BEST dogs!!! We've gotten a cat and a dog from them.

They go to the shelters and pick out the ones with the best chance of getting a home (so basically they save the best dogs from getting put to sleep)

They also get purebreeds in all the time...just be patient and check they're website!

HTH!

save a pet

ETS: we have had two male dogs (one neutered one not neutered) and we have never had a spraing problem either

We got one of our cats from the Wantagh town shelter. They had so many animals and they do destroy them, so if you get a pet from there you will be saving a life.

We had to get a declawed cat because the cat I already had was declawed and they had 5 different declawed cats the day we went there. I wanted to take them all!

If you haven't already been there, please check it out. I think they also list their pets on petfinder.com.

Re: Going to look for a dog

I think only male cats will spray, male dogs mark.. Sonic used to mark (and he still does a little) until we got him neutered.

I am kind of upset at the guy who has the 5 yr old chi.. what a bunch of BS, so he rather gives up HIS dogs and keep his roommate's dog? That is just ridiculous, I bet he is giving him away for other reasons. Poor little thing has to adjust to a new house and new family at 5 yrs old Chat Icon
He is a cutie, I would adopt him in a heartbeat (if I don't have a herd already!)

We have 2 males and they have never done that. One of our pups pooped under the dining room table for a few weeks but has gotten passed that.

We used petfinder.com too to start. We ended up getting our first two kittens from a rescue group called Humane Urban Group (HUG) and then two more later down the road from Long Beach Animal Shelter who had more kittens than I have ever seen. We weren't there for dogs so I didn't pay attn to how many they had. You may want to check with them. As far as Danielle's concern. We've never had a problem with either set of cats scratching the upholstery on our furniture. So long as you get them a scratching post as kittens they should use that and that alone.

Re: Going to look for a dog

Hi Scott:

Please do not buy from Shake-a-paw. They (like most pet stores) are notoriuos for using Puppy Mills and have been *called out* for misrepresenting the pedigree lines of the dogs they sell, and have even passed off mixes as purebreds.

The pic of the stray Chihuahua is adorable. I would say that if you played with the Chihuahua and you felt like it was a good match for you then you should do it.

Also about adopting an older dog. Chihuahuas can live way past 12 yrs (sometimes up tp 18 years) My first rescue Hans was 10 yrs old when I rescued him & he passed last October at the age of 18.

Also, many of the dogs in the shelters will look *sickly* becuase many of them will not eat regularly when they are in the shelter.

When we got Foxy from the shelter you could count her ribs through her coat. By the time we took her to her Vet visit 7 days after we got her, she had already put on 5 lbs. She is now at her optimal weight and has been since about a month after we got her.

As for the spraying, we have 2 males and there was only a small problem once when one dog was fixed and one was not. Other than that they don't spray at all.
