General Anesthesia...for a 2 year old?? If you have been there come in please...

My DD has to have a cyst removed from her chest/neck...its same day surgery but she will be going under General Anesthesia. If you have been there before with your child, are there any side effects I should possibly look out for??

Any advice will be great!

My nephew was 4 when he had tubes put in. Same situation... same day. My sis said he was so cranky and uncomfortable when he woke up, but after a movie and some cuddling time he was back to his same old self running around and fighting with his brother and sisters. You would've never know he was in surgery a few hours earlier

My DS had a circumcision repair when he was 2. He was fine with anesthesia. Did cry or anything when he woke, was just groggy. He will be going under anesthesia again in a couple of weeks to have his tonsils and adenoids removed.

Re: General Anesthesia...for a 2 year old?? If you have been there come in please...

We just went through it in Januray and I was terrified....more for myself I think.

DS is 2 and had to have a birthmark removed on his foot.
I brought him into the OR and held him while they gave him anesthesia, before he got any IV....this was absolute torture for me, I am not going to lie. The worst part was after he was out, they put him on the table and the anesthesiologist told me to give him a kiss.......it was horrible. I almost collapsed, but I had to do it, DH would never be able to.

I cried like a baby, and by the time I settled down and went to the coffee shop, the surgeon was at our table, all done!

DS was an inconsolable mess when he woke up. He tried taking out all his tubes and pulling off the chest pads. The nurse had to hold him to calm him down, and he started right back up when he saw us. I had to sit and really hold him and rock him until he fell back asleep for about another half hour. He then woke up a little cranky but much better......he drank so much juice I thought he was going to float away!

After that he was totally fine, back to normal.

It's definitely pretty traumatic for the parents, the kids are totally fine...

Good Luck! Chat Icon

my younger ds went under 2 times, both times he woke up dizzy (flopping around). 1 time he was a "happy drunk" but 1 time he cried for a few minutes and was fine and smiley very soon after and nursed.

my older ds went under once but woke up very dizzy (totally normal( and it took about 2 hours for that to wear off.

it's harder on us then on them! Chat Icon

DS went in for tubes at 14 mths. I was so worried about him going under general anesthesia. When he woke up, he was groggy and crying. I went in and held him and consoled him.

Half an hour later he was running up and down the halls of the pediatric ward!
