Freezing breast milk

I am 9 days post partum and I am exclusively pumping breast milk. It has been going fabulously as I am able to pump much more than I need each day for the baby's feedings. Hence I have started freezing the extra. Is this breast milk as good as the fresh breast milk? Does this mean if I want to provide breast milk for six months I can stop after four if I have two months frozen? Or am I sacrificing something by using the frozen milk?

freezing milk looses some of its anti-microbal properties, but I don't know the exact details

Congrats on your baby! If you find yourself with extra, it's worth freezing. The PP is correct that frozen BM has less antibodies than fresh milk, but it's still good for your baby since it's BM. Personally, I would give the freshly pumped milk most of the time and if you have frozen milk that is getting old I would cycle that in every once in a while and replenish the freezer stash. Be careful though, I lost 300 oz of frozen BM because I had a lipase issue causing DS to reject my frozen milk but he had no problems drinking freshly pumped milk. Luckily, this time around, DD is okay drinking my frozen milk. I would test a batch of your frozen milk with your LO to make sure the baby is okay with it. I have over 700 oz banked in my deep freeze and still growing. I plan to give it to DD so that I can stop pumping early and still make it to my goal of a year Chat Icon

Great. Thanks! How many ounces do you think equate with a month's worth of milk?

It really varies depending on how much your LO drinks. DD's a peanut and only wants 24 oz of BM a day right now (she's 7 months old). I know other babies who are taking in closer to 35-40 oz/day and some way more!

Definitely take a look at KellyMom. It's a great resource!
