I just don't know how anyone in their right mind can support this. If someone wants to test there are plenty of testing sites and at home kits are widely available. Why not just have a place that you can go pick them up on an as needed basis? Honestly I am so disgusted with this administration.

I'm going to say that at this point I actually miss Trump. Ridiculous idiotic tweets and all.

I guess you didn’t try to go to urgent care or go get tested over the holiday?

I went before the holidays to urgent care for a non covid related issue. Had to wait 2 hours to be seen in a waiting room full of sick people. After that lines were forming hours before they even open and people were turned away because they reached capacity for the entire day by opening.

So while I get maybe this isn’t necessary in your opinion when there is a surge it really is not easy to be tested or even easy to be able to be seen for non covid related issues.
I can’t imagine how the places that will have free test would look if there is another surge probably just as bad as urgent cares.

Listen i am over it all. Think we should go back to normal just pointing out that it really isn’t that easy to get tested during surges.

So don't get tested. (not directing this at you, just the masses!) If you are sick, stay home. Assume it's Covid and stay home. Like you should with any illness.

If you need to be tested for work or travel these home tests won't help much because I can't imagine many people accepting them as they are easy to fake a negative- just run under water.

Exactly. Treat this like any other virus and illness you have had in the past.
Travel and work, IME don't accept them anyway.

Honestly I think this is just going to give people more anxiety that they need to test every 2 seconds and it is ridiculous.

Actually my whole family tested on Christmas morning so we could see elderly family members. I planned ahead and knew that I would need to test so I ordered tests. In addition one of my children had exposure so I went online and scheduled a test for them. I am a planner though and I research things so I found places that took appointments. All you had to do was keep refreshing on solvhealth and appointments would pop up. My inlaws had to wait on line for three hours because they are old and not as internet savvy but most people I know had no problem getting appointment in the few days leading up to Christmas.

If a place is just giving out free tests as needed I don't think that the line would be very long to grab a test. It's much different than going to urgent care where they need to get your insurance info and take your vitals etc.

But if you are actually sick and don't know a week ahead - it was near impossible to get a test unless you planned well in advance or paid a lot of money. I was able to get my kids in to their ped by calling the second they opened but 5 minutes later I'd have to wait a day or two...

It wasn't nearly impossible. I was able to get three appointments same day just by going on the solvhealth site in the week leading up to Christmas. One for a family friend and two for family members, And they had appointments all over Nassau, Queens and Suffolk. It just took a couple minutes of research.

I should've clarified - in my area, you could only get appts at places that were charging $150 per teset (which a lot of people who were traveling internationally paid to guarantee their results). THe places with shorter lines - the test results didn't come back for days so it wasn't even worth it in the end... The home tests would've been handier then during the actual surge, especially for people who felt so crappy they didn't want to go out.

We just got free ones from our school district. They expire in 10 days... I am just curious as to how long these government ones are good for and how long they will take to actually get here as most things they do seem to be a hot mess.

The last time I went was 12/18 and was in line for 2 hours. I have made an appointment once in the 11/12 weeks (lost track would have to go look at my pictures of tests) and I have got in faster without one (before all the hoopla with needing to get a test for shits and giggles).

It’s the westchester way.

I think I’m banned from that urgent care anyway because when I tried to go for a non Covid issue they turned me away and I said “well, at least there will be less traffic when half the town is dead.”

We just got free ones from our school district. They expire in 10 days... I am just curious as to how long these government ones are good for and how long they will take to actually get here as most things they do seem to be a hot mess.

You can use the solvhealth site anywhere. I have no doubt had you known about it you would have been able to get an appointment in your area as well. Many on LI were complaining but no one bothers to do the research. There was plenty of availability if you knew where to look.

The government tests will expire quickly as well I am sure which I mentioned earlier. this is a gross waste of taxpayer money. How about use that money to fund research for treatments?

I get that it might have come in handy but millions upon millions of dollars does not need to be spent so that people might not have to experience a little inconvenience.

Solvhealth

I should've clarified - in my area, you could only get appts at places that were charging $150 per teset (which a lot of people who were traveling internationally paid to guarantee their results). THe places with shorter lines - the test results didn't come back for days so it wasn't even worth it in the end... The home tests would've been handier then during the actual surge, especially for people who felt so crappy they didn't want to go out.

We are both barking up the wrong tree here Chat Icon We need to start a lower Hudson valley board.

I saw exactly what you did. In fact, one of our 2 local urgent cares closed in the midst of all this because they couldn’t handle the workload.

I wish I could just shut down when I can't handle my workload.
Man my mental health would be soooo much better!

I definitely agree that the government shouldn't be paying for it - along with the N95 masks - but more home tests should've been available during the surge, especially for those just testing just to test.

My biggest problem with this is how many times can you use one mask before you have to get rid of it?

I don’t understand the logic of wanting everyone to use N 95 or even kn95 mask they’re not that cheap and if they have to be replaced often who wants to pay for it and how About those who can’t afford to pay for them?

Plus N95 masks mean nothing unless they’re fitted properly.
This is definitely dumb but if I can easily grab some for free I probably will. and not even to wear now during Covid but just to have in hand in case of some other emergency comes up Chat Icon

They are supposed to be single use only. And you are right - they useless unless fitted correctly.

I had a similar experience in my area. One of my kids was exposed about a week before Christmas. It was a little tough getting an appointment, but spots had opened up at a pediatric urgent care when I checked in the middle of the night. We still had to wait over an hour past the appointment time to be seen, but at least we got in. Another one of my kids had some mild symptoms right around New Year’s. By that point, it was completely impossible to get any appointments unless we wanted to show up over an hour before one of the many urgent cares nearby opened up to wait outside in line. If you were able to put your name on the list, the appointment wasn’t until 8-10 hours later. People were complaining about appointments being canceled or not being able to get appointments after waiting in line because they ran out of tests. Our town distributed some free tests, but they ran out well before getting through the massive line of cars. Pharmacies near me rarely had tests in stock and if they did, they were sold out quickly. There were big signs on pharmacies letting customers know that they didn’t have any tests.

I assume things are a little better now than they were even a few weeks ago. I’m not sure how helpful the tests are when they’re negative, but if someone tests positive, they can avoid a trip out to get a test, potentially exposing others and don’t have to wait days for PCR results. I think this can help some people, but it would’ve been more useful a month ago. I also agree that there could’ve been better ways of managing the distribution of tests

Gee I wonder who is making money off of all these free tests........
Us taxpayers will most likely be footing the bill.

But,but, but it is freeeeee. Chat Icon

I just have to laugh when people get caught up in who is "making money" off of you. As if the healthcare industry is any different than anything else we pour our money into.

Samsung "makes money" off you because you want a phone in your pocket.

Doritos "makes money" off you because you like to eat junk food.

Your landscaper "makes money" off you because you'd rather not mow your own lawn.

Gap "makes money" off you because you need clothes.

Nike "makes money" off you because you need sneakers.

And yes, drug companies, doctors, etc etc also "make money" off you because we all need medical care, medical treatments and money.

Get over it. The entire world is a business. That's life.

I don't think putting money into ensuring every American has convenient access to a COVID test is a bad thing. Taxpayer money is squandered over way less useful and far more stupid things such as a wall that literally kept nobody out.Chat Icon

See I don't agree with this. These are all things that you choose to buy. Things that you earn money and treat yourself. This whole covid test/vaccine things are all things being somewhat forced on you that someone has to pay for even though claim to be free and some one who is making tons of money on them

You choose to get vaccinated or not

You choose to get tested or not.

If you choose to not do either well then like everything in life, you deal with the consequences of that. But it's still a choice

Again, everything in this world is a business. Everything revolves around making money whether it's healthcare, consumer products or a service.

Some people didn't have the option to "choose" to get vaccinated or tested. It was made mandatory. Buying any of the things mentioned is not mandatory. people can't just give up there jobs and survive it was a hard choice for many. Whether you choose to acknowledge or not there are negative things coming out now about the vaccine. Forcing people to choose between an unproven vaccine or survival is not "choosing" as the term you used.
