Formula Shortage

I feel so sad for new parents who use formula (for whatever reason). It must be so stressful.

The comments are killing me - we got by without formula, blah, blah... Yes, but if for whatever reason you have decided not to breast feed - you can't just start months later!

I thank God I'm done bearing children because that sounds horribly stressful to have to worry about feeding your baby.
And I don't do breastfeeding

Re: Formula Shortage

https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/2022/05/11/baby-formula-shortage-whats-cause/9732314002/

The ongoing infant formula shortage appears to be getting worse, with nearly 40% of popular baby formula brands sold out at retailers across the U.S. during the week starting April 24, according to an analysis by Datasembly, which assessed supplies at more than 11,000 stores.

That's a higher level than other products, said Ben Reich, CEO of the Tysons, Virginia-based research firm.

"Inflation, supply chain shortages, and product recalls have brought an unprecedented amount of volatility to the category, and we expect to continue to see baby formula as one of the most affected categories in the market,” he said.

In February, Abbott Nutrition voluntarily recalled three types of infant formula after four babies became sick with bacteria infections after consuming the products.

The recall was for select lots of Similac, Alimentum and EleCare formulas that were manufactured at an Abbott facility in Sturgis, Michigan.

In March, the Food and Drug Administration issued preliminary findings about the formula maker's failure to maintain sanitary conditions and procedures at that plant.

CVS, Target, Walgreens limit amount of formula shoppers can purchase
Walgreens continues to limit shoppers to three infant and toddler formula products per transaction, Walgreens Boots Alliance spokesman Steve Cohen said. "Due to increased demand and various supplier challenges, infant and toddler formulas are seeing constraint across the country," he said.

Yes I hate those holier than thou parents that say "well they should be breastfeeding anyway". Some moms can't breastfeed. Some have adopted children. There could be severe allergies. There are many reasons why someone would have to use formula for their baby. My son was on a specialty formula (Elecare) due to a milk protein allergy, at 9 months I was able to move him to a milk based formula (was pretty much forced to, because his formula was recalled) and thank god we are almost done and off formula transitioning to milk soon because it's getting bad trying to find his formula. I managed to check Amazon when they were in stock and ordered some, and then two seconds later they were sold out.

Formula Shortage

My sister in law just had a baby. I told her due to the shortage, I’d at least try breastfeeding. She said she had “lots” of formula. Um, okay. My other SIL with an infant even told her to BF and said she would if she had a newborn. She, however, has an 11 month old so she can’t.

Wow I’d understand the supply shortages, the inflation…that’s happening with a lot of other things but the recalls?? That’s crazy!!!

Agreed. I hate those comments. Like what they are doing is going to make their child into the golden child and the others will be a bunch a toothless bums. Fed is best no matter the way.

Yes - and if you had already decided not to breastfeed, you can't just change your mind, that ship has sailed.

We need to keep in mind the low income families who don’t have the means to afford it, as those who can find formula are facing a 40% price increase. I hope people don’t start diluting the formula. There are many babies who also can’t be breastfed due to mothers substance abuse or medication. I am very concerned about this…

There was a recall of formula produced at one of the US plants after two babies died due to contaminated formula. The plant was shut down due to numerous health code citations and there is no information about why it hasn’t reopened or when it is expected to reopen

I do very much believe in breastfeeding and the support and village moms need to make it work (it does not come easy for many) but at the same time I understand breastfeeding is not always possible for a, b, or c reason or simply because the mom doesn’t want to and that’s ok. I really dislike extremisms and I have found both sides can be extremists with their views.

Agreed, knock on wood, I wasn't a breastfed baby. I actually was one that was given food right away, my kids weren't as well as my husband and we are not sickly people at all.
Like everything else in life, it is a choice and no one should attack someone for doing either.

I wouldn't know if it was not possible for a b or c or d or e reason because I never did it or tried it.
Why? Because I didn't want to.
Simple as that.
No desire.
The thought of it gave me such anxiety that it wasn't even a thought in my brain.
My body my choice. My child my choice.
Not sure how anyone thinks what I do with my body and my child is any of their business.

I was the same way with pumping. For me, breastfeeding seemed natural and I didn't have an issue with it. But, the thought of attaching a contraption to my breasts to pump seemed so weird to me that I never tried it.

It turned out that I actually wasn't producing much milk, so my daughter got breast milk when I was around and formula other times. She's a healthy 13YO now, so I guess it worked!

So quit your job and get yourself barefoot in that kitchen!

I agree but I think that what often happens, even when people don't mean to do it, is that people think that in order to support breastfeeding they need to slam formula feeding. I have done both. My first was breastfed exclusively for 6 months, the second for 3 weeks and the third not at all. And with the third I was definitely made to feel bad by many about not even attempting to breast feed but honestly I have been there, done that and it was not for me for multiple reasons and it took me a long time to get comfortable telling people to go scratch.

I agree but honestly it can happen with formula too. I did both as well, I formula fed my first one and breastfed my second one. I got well intentioned comments and judgmental ones too, from both sides. I wanted to breastfeed my first one but I rarely knew what I was even doing, the majority of the comments I got were…why do u even bother?…why are u doing this to urself?…are u trying to win a trophy or something? I knew the option for formula was there all alone (thankfully) but what I needed (because I wanted to) was support and advice on how to properly breastfeed, not comments like…stop worrying so much and just get some formula. Many of us moms don’t know what we’re doing when attempting to breastfeed, especially first time moms. I think support (the right support) should be a priority when having a baby but always having in consideration what the mom wants. Like Nel said, ultimately it’s our bodies and we should be able to decide what’s best for us.

I will say this hasn't affect us.. we have alimentum covered by insurance and we get it monthly. No issues there thankfully. She's also turning 1 soon so i'm glad i'm not needing it much anymore. I feel terrible for my friends who can't get the regular similac/enfamil. Some are switching brands entirely and the babies have to adjust to that now
