Flying with an infant..

My husband and I are thinking about taking our 9 month old to Florida some time this spring. What does everyone do as far as getting to the airport with an infant who needs a rear facing (convertible) car seat? We live in Astoria and have a car. When it was just the two of us, we would take a cab to and from the airports. Our options now are:
1. Drive to the airport (LGA or JFK) and pay for parking. Problem is that the parking is far from the terminal. My husband can drop off DD and I at the terminal, park and then take the bus or train to the terminal and meet us there.
2. Take a taxi to/from the airport. Pro is that we would be dropped off right in front. Con is that we would have to install the car seat in the taxi.
3. Drive to Mcarthur Airport and pay for parking right in front of the terminal. My husband grew up in Ronkonkoma so we can stay at his house which we do often and are comfortable with. The pro is the parking situation is really easy. Cons are less airlines to choose from and the inconvenience of having to possibly leave our house the night before. I would not even consider McArthur unless there are non stop flights.

ETA- Asking a relative or friend for a ride to and from LGA or JFK isn't really an option.

what about family uber? comes with an installed carseat.....i recently just flew to jfk and my uber driver did the carseat for us! needless to say he got an extra tip!

if this isn't an option, i would drive there, drop them off and then go park your car....good luck!

Is the car seat rear facing? I was under the impression that uber will only come with forward facing seats.

Re: Flying with an infant..

Are you flying with your car seat so that dc has his won seat on the plane, Which I STRONGLY recommend you do)?. If so, then it’s easiest to use a call-ahead car service and just install the car seat in the car service car rear-facing both when they come to your house, and then again when they collect you at the airport. That’s what we did.

The main reason we are flying with a car seat is because we will rent a car in FL and would rather bring our own car seat. I heard rental car companies charge a lot for car seats and I don't fully trust that they haven't been in accidents. We are leaning towards gate checking the car seat and having her be a lap baby. Why do you recommend that we pay for her own seat?

Can you use an infant seat? I only ask because I found my infant seat to be MUCH easier to install than either of the convertibles we have. Click the latch connectors in, tighten it and done. My one convertible is a gigantic PITA to install and the other is a huge baby throne.

I personally would not allow DD in an "unknown" car seat, but I'm also a car seat psycho.

Re: Flying with an infant..

In any instance of turbulence, it’s so easy for a baby to either go flying out of your arms or in essence become like an airbag between you and the back of the seat in front of you. If you google, you’ll find lots of videos of actual footage. That’s the #1 reason. It’s also a nice extra perk that the baby knows his seat and is accustomed to travel in it and so it should put him somewhat at ease. I know the extra $ is annoying, but I’m a safety freak. And I know people say it’s a short flight, but often, turbulence is worse on shorter flights because you’re not so far above the cloud line.

She will be 1 year by the time we take this trip. I doubt we can take the infant seat

Granted, I had peanuts, but my dds were well under the height and weight allotments for the infant seats at 1 year, and we made the switch to a convertible seat at around one year. She may still be in the infant seat.

Are you going to be driving in FL? If so, I'd do 1 and take the seat with you so you have it in FL.

If you don't need a seat in FL, then I'd do option 2 and take a company that provides carseats. Just one less thing to lug around.

Yes, we are definitely renting a car in FL.

I prefer option 1. That's what we did the only time we flew with the kids. We did curbside baggage check. I waited inside with the girls and our carseats while DH parked the car. Parking was expensive though.

Good question, i wasn't sure about this...can you bring your infant seat instead? or what about a regular car service call and take some extra time to set up the carseat rather than being rushed in an uber.

i would stay with the family and go out of Islip. Parking is better but also just a better and smaller airport to manage with kids

I kind of agree with this. The security lines are usually short too and less hectic.

Since you are bringing the car seat, I'd just get a car service and use your car seat in the car. We do that a lot.

I would just take a cab and install the seat in the cab. Then bring it on the plane if you are buying a seat. If not, check it. Easy peasy!

Re: Flying with an infant..

Fly out of Southwest in Islip. Much easier airport. Less chance for delays as you don’t deal with NYC air traffic issues.

Pay for a seat and install the car seat on the plane. Safer and easier for the parents.

Re: Flying with an infant..Update on bottom

Thanks for all the responses. We chose option 3 because we found a flight to Orlando for less from McArthur and because we wanted our first flight with DD to be as simple as possible. It worked out great. It was such an easy airport to navigate and getting there from Ronkonkoma is so easy.

Islip is truly a dream to travel out of. It is heaven on earth.
I only wish they had more direct flights out of there.
