Flying with a carseat?

I am flying with my 8 month old and I was going to bring our infant seat. If you traveled with an infant seat did you check it or bring it to the gate?

def def def bring it to the gate....less of them handling it

and...

you can ask the gate attendant when you get to the gate if there if there is an empty seat next to you, then they often let you bring it on with you and have your DC use it (without buying a ticket)! If not - it is waiting for you outside the plane door when you arrive at your destination!

We just flew with DD and we checked it with our luggage. They have really big clear bags that they will put it in. We actually checked 2 car seats and had no problems. It would have been too much to lug them down to the gate with us.

Same with us I was so happy to hand it over to them, did not want to lug it any more then necessary.

Edited: sorry didn't realize you were talking about the infant car seat. When we traveled with DD when she was 4mths old we did check both the stroller and car seat at the gate because we had a travel system but once she was out of that I checked her convertible carseat with our luggage. FYI carseats don't count as luggage pieces, it gets checked in for free.

Re: Flying with a carseat?

Thanks Ladies. Now I debating what stroller to bring. I am traveling alone with DD so I want to make this as easy as possible. I have to bring the infant car seat, but then I was thinking do I bring the Graco stroller that goes with it so it is easier to lug the car seat around, which could be a problem since the friends I am traveling with when i get there will have to fit it in their car whenever we go anywhere and I am not the only one with a kid. Or do I bring a lightweight stroller but then have to lug the carseat. I am also going to be bringing a suitcase, diaper bag and purse. HMMMM....decisions decisions.

I'd bring the Graco stroller that the carseat fits in and gate check them both.

If you have a Baby Bjorn, or another kind of wrap, I recommend bringing that as well - so you can put DC in there and have your arms free - sometimes they even let you walk through security with DC in the carrier (they did for me the time I flew alone).

I'd check your suitcase thoug - one less thing to worry about carrying.

Thanks, I was planning on bringing my moby wrap, we don't go anywhere without it.
