flu spinoff...anyone's kid allergic to egg?

He's not an egg eater, so I have no idea how allergic he is...but he eats baked goods with eggs...

His RAST test in July showed no egg allergy.

His skin test this month showed an allergy.

I am waiting for allergist to get the RAST test results to compare, but in the meanwhile, he REALLY needs a flu shot.

He was hospitalized twice last month and I am really scared of him catching it.
(his BFF's mom works in an elem school, so he's exposed to different germs 5 days a week)

I am tempted to just go this week and get it done.

thoughts?

ETA:
11/6
Finally got the RAST test to allergist. Met with office this morning.

They said force egg into him today, if no reaction, go to ped tomorrow for shot.

So, by the grace of God, and thanks to ketcup and cheese, this kid of mine just ate 2 scrambled eggs. So, we will wait and see.
If all goes well, he will get shot tomorrow.

Re: flu spinoff...anyone's kid allergic to egg?

Did he ever have a flu shot before? Why not get an opinion from the allergist? My DS showed an allergic reaction to eggs a week after his first dose of the flu shot. He is supposed to get a second dose of the flu shot because first timers get 2 doses. We just had his skin test done yesterday and he showed an agg allergy. The allergist gave us the go ahead for the flu shot anyway. My DS does not have an anaphylactic allergy and the risks from the flu are still higher than the risks from the shot. The amount of egg in the shot is minimal but with any egg allergy, I would only give it if the doctor says it is okay.

Re: flu spinoff...anyone's kid allergic to egg?

I am waiting for allergist to get back to me.

First he had a death in family, so was out for a week...then his office said they never recieved his results from ped's office to compare results...

I am in such a waiting game.

He's never had flu shot before, but because of asthma, he really needs it this year.

Monday I will bother him again...I always just get his nurses on the phone.

I am tempted to just go to ped and have them give it.

We are traveling for Thanksgiving and will be around soooo many kids.

thanks for your input

My son has a mild egg allergy and every year gets the flu shot (he is high risk he has asthma) every year his ped gives him benadryal before and watches for a 1/2 hour after the shot BUT this year his dr wasnt there and the dr i saw said its ok he egg allergy is so low he will be fine well 3 hours later we went to the ER for a allergic reaction to the flu shot and my poor 6year old spent 5 hours in an ER room. so i would think twice about giving my son the flu shot again after what i went through this year.

OMG Marie! Well, I will wait for allergist now then. thanks for replying.

I HATE how they scare you to death about getting the shot, then keep you hanging with no solution!

Re: flu spinoff...anyone's kid allergic to egg?

I remember YEARS ago, I was getting my allergy shot for the week and they offered me an egg free version of the flu shot....so maybe allergist will have one.

I am going to call Monday, if dr won't talk to me, I'll just go to the office and stare at them.

You can't take the inhaled treatment if you are an asthmatic.

I wouldn't take the chance before you get the results. What are the chances that he'll get the flu in the next week or so? I would get the shot for everyone else in the family in the meantime if you're really concerned. My DS is allergic to eggs and the RAST test showed he is severely allergic. However, he can eat eggs in baked goods, but he has a reaction to whole eggs. We've never had a skin test.

Re: flu spinoff...anyone's kid allergic to egg?

I would wait for the allergist. Also, if you decide to give the flu shot, make sure that the doctor's office has epinephrine on hand. Don't assume that they do. We had to wait an extra week for our pediatrician to get epinephrine. For my DS's second dose, the allergist said that our pediatrician might send us back to him to have it done at his office. I don't know about an egg free flu shot and as far as I know, my DS is too young for the inhaled vaccine.

DD is also severely allergic to egg according to he RAST and skin test so because of that I don't know what type of reaction she has to egg since she has not eaten it. Now she can eat it baked in stuff with no problems. Her milk allergy is a little lower than her egg and she has a bad reaction with milk.
We were at the allergist office last week because I wanted to test for MMR and Flu. He didn't test for flu only MMR (which came out fine) and administered the shot. We then waited about 15 minutes to see if she would have a reaction to a full dosage. She will eventually get the flu shot since she needs it for school in NJ but she will hopefully outgrow the allergy by then. DS in the meantime did get the shot.

I would have him tested for the Flu shot so at least you have an idea of what it might be and then give him the shot. If he got that sick and it isn't even flu season yet I think it is important for him to get it. DD was never sick last year and that is why our allergist didn't feel it was necessary.

Janice, I thought I read something recently about there being a flu shot for those with egg allergies - ask your ped.

There is a test for allergy to MMR? What is involved?
