first night with the new pup

Oh my am I tired. We picked up our baby pom yesterday and spent the afternoon playing with him and getting him acquainted with his new home. He seemed to like everything we got for him. he had an accident but than went on the pad, so we're 50% there in that dept.
At one point, he jumped off DH's stomach and landed hard on the floor, than he started yelping very loudly and I quickly picked him up and he stopped. He seemed to not be hurt but it scared the crap out of us! The last thing our breeder told us was to be careful when putting him down cause their legs break so easily.

Than night time is when the fun started. He's sleeping in a play pen with his bed, toys, food/water and a weewee pad. It took me 30 min.s to get him to sleep at 10:30. Than he woke up and started crying at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and than was up with 200% energy at 5:30am. It took me 15 minutes each time he woke up to get him back to sleep- but I kept waking up to see if he was ok. At 5:30, DH switched with me and basically played with him for an hour while I tried to sleep. I am beyond tired today- I had to take a claritan for my allergies and that did not help the situation- I'm so out of it. But he's wonderful and adorable and fun and very loving. We're so worried about him at home today, but we put the a/c and radio on for him so hopefully he'll be ok. We were very depressed on the way to work today. Only half a day left till we're back with him!

i'll post some pics tomorrow, the camera battery was dead yesterday.

ETA: Pics of the lil rug rat- Chip. He had so much energy when we got home. He did fine during the day. He is just the best lil guy ever.
He feel asleep at 11 last night, wook up at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 but than slept to 6:30!!!!! We were so happy to have some rest!

Welcome to owning a puppy!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

We got our puppy June 22, and she was exactly like this for the first week.

Here's a few things to try that our vet recommended.

1. Get an alarm clock to put near the crate for at night.

2. Buy a puppy pal at Target - you heat up the teddy bear like animal for 30 seconds and place near the puppy and it's warm and acts as another body of heat for them to curl up to.

3. When the puppy cries during the night, take the puppy outside to do their business, then bring them back inside and place them back in the crate and walk away. I know it sounds mean, but the dog has to learn that every time it cries, you won't come running to them to calm them down for 15 minutes or more at a time. By night 3, our puppy was learning and she slept for 3 hours, then woke up, and then another night, it went to 5 hours, etc.

4. If you plan to have the puppy sleep with you at night when it's older, try bringing the crate upstairs so they can see you - this may help. It did for us and she's now sleeping through the night until 5:30/6am when she needs to be let out to do #1 & #2, but then she'll go back to bed.

Congrats again and if you want any help, don't hesitate to fm me!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Congrats on your new addition! Don't worry, each night will get easier and easier... it's good "training" for when you have a kid, right?!

Can't wait for pics. What's it's name!?

Probably not a good idea to keep water in there with him all night. We would take Katie's food and water away about 2 hours before bedtime. Otherwise he'll have to go all the time!

Re: first night with the new pup

thanks everyone!

Our pup is training on wee wee pads, we won't be training him to go outside. The breeder told us poms actually prefer to go inside. So, he went during the night on his pad- i was so proud this morning, hehe. But than he started to go on the rug this morning and we caught him and put him on the pad.

so we don't have to take him out at night, but he still cries cause he's prob freaking about being alone (although the play pen is right next to our bed).

I hope we don't return to a mess today. He's used to being in a pen, but not on his own- he was always with the other pups. I hope he's not crying to much- i'm dying here to get back to him!

Re: first night with the new pup

added pics. He did better last night, but still wook up crying 4 times. It seems like he wants to play at 2am? I don't get it, hehe.
