Favorite charities/organizations?

This is just a list of charities or organizations that people would like to see support for. Could be an organization that you're directly involved in, one that helped you, one that you feel deeply for, or just one that you found about, and think it needs some attention.

https://johnscrazysocks.com/

About Us
John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son venture inspired by co-founder John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down syndrome. John’s affinity for crazy socks paired with his love of making people smile made our mission clear: we want to spread happiness.

We have a social mission and a retail mission, and they are indivisible. We want to show what is possible when you give someone a chance. Every day, we demonstrate what people with intellectual disabilities can do. And we believe in giving back: we donate 5 percent of our earnings to the Special Olympics as they’ve played a vital role in John’s development. We continue to expand our charity partners by offering and creating socks with specific “awareness” themes, such as our Autism Awareness Socks and Down Syndrome Awareness Socks.

We match our social mission with a commitment to be a great sock store. We have socks you can love with the widest array of fun, unique and beautifully designed socks that let you express your passion and personality. And we deliver those socks with fast, personal service. We provide same-day shipping and every package includes a hand-written thank you note from John and some candy.

We love what we do. We hope you love our socks and that your experience with John’s Crazy Socks brings you happiness.

John Lee Cronin and Mark X. Cronin

Re: Favorite charies/organizations?

I've contributed to this organization, and I really like their mission of supporting mentally and emotionally wounded soldiers and their families

https://lonesurvivorfoundation.org/

POST-COMBAT EDUCATION
Did you know the estimated number of combat service members, veterans who suffer from signature wounds such as invisible injuries of combat trauma, traumatic brain injury (or both) is 1 in 3? These signature wounds include painful symptoms such as flashbacks, avoidance, isolation, hyper-arousal reactions including anger outbursts. Lone Survivors Foundation’s focus is to educate service members, veterans and their family members on the warning signs, symptoms, and characteristics of these injuries to better prepare our men and women when returning home.
...
FAMILY IMPACT
The stress on military families from overseas deployments is immense. When a service member is deployed, the separation can be lonely and difficult for both the service member and his or her spouse. As challenging as being apart can be, however, coming home often involves hard realities as well. This is especially the case when a spouse is severely injured. The pressure of coping with wartime injuries is often a cause of military divorce. The sheer number of soldiers who have returned from Iraq or Afghanistan suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other related problems is undeniable.

PTSD also takes a toll on marriages and other relationships. For example, research has found that 38 percent of “Vietnam veteran marriages failed within six months of the veteran’s return from Southeast Asia.” Research also finds that “veterans with PTSD are more likely to report marital or relationship problems, higher levels of parenting problems, and generally poorer family adjustment than veterans without PTSD.” A 2005 Pentagon study found that the divorce rate for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans was up 78 percent since 2003.

Tunnel to towers is amazing

https://t2t.org/

The mission of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to honor the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. We also honor our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.

Smart Home Program FAQs
Our mission is to show our gratitude for the sacrifices and service of the U.S. Armed Services returning from war who have been catastrophically injured by building smart technology homes so they can regain their independence. Smart homes technology has a myriad of features designed to accommodate wheelchairs and give our catastrophically injured service members independence and safety at home.

The Gold Star Family Home Program, launched in September 2018, honors the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. The Foundation will provide a mortgage-free home to surviving spouses with young children.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is committed to ensuring we never forget 9/11, the sacrifices made, and those that continue to be made by our first responders in the line of duty. Through the Fallen First Responder Home Program, Tunnel to Towers aims to pay off the mortgages of fallen law enforcement officers and firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty, or to 9/11 related illness, and leave behind young children. The Foundation’s goal is to ensure stability and security for these families facing sudden, tragic loss.

Re: Favorite charies/organizations?

Great idea for a post.

My go tos are St Jude's and Sandy Hook Promise.

However, in the spirit of promoting a lesser known organization, I'll share that I recently started to support the Committee to Protect Journalists.

/CPJ

I'm a bit of a geopolitical junkie and the rising tide of authoritarianism around the world is disturbing. People think of journalists as overpaid mouthpieces on the major networks but so many more put their lives in danger for little money to expose human rights violations, corruption, and various bad actors. A staggering number have been killed in recent years.

Thank you for sharing these links.

Like the above poster, I too donate to Sandy Hook. It's a cause that tears at my heartstrings.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I love helping out with all of the "wish trees" at the holidays, brightening a child's Christmas is the best.

I like to donate to local LI nonprofits rather than charitable conglomerates. The money goes right into the community. I look at what the nonprofit does for the actual community it exists in, how it outreaches and engages with other communities, and what kind of programming and services they are offering. I make year-end gifts, but I also make gifts throughout the year as needed. One of the directors usually calls me once or twice a year to sponsor an event, so I underwrite as well.

We are a retail outlet open to the public to shop for quality donated new and like-new building supplies and home furnishings at a fraction of retail prices. The revenue from Suffolk ReStore supports Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s mission.

I've been to this place a few times. Donated some items, bought some items. They only have what people donated, so you never know what they'll have, but sometimes they'll have just what you need, or something close enough. I bought overhead kitchen cabinets from them to put in my home office.

I also like Habitat for Humanity's mission as well, so buying from here helps them.

This is a great organization that I have personal experience with (unfortunately). It’s one of the better groups focused on military needs. I’m not a huge fan of WWP.

Since High School i have been associated with All Stars Project. They help inner city youth who grow up in poor and underprivileged communities. Being a peer mediator in high school helped open my eyes to the ignorance in the world and I'm glad to be part of an organization that helps young kids, who think that they will not amount to much, become successful adults.

ALS RIde for Life

This is an amazing charity that raises money for research for ALS. In addition, it provides local families with equipment, vans, referrals resources and any other support they might need when hearing this diagnosis.

I like to give to smaller charities with little to no overhead as well. Otherwise I feel like I’m paying someone’s salary.

We are as well, we have been part of it since my son was 8 and he is now 22. It's one of the VERY FEW charities that actually gives directly back to the individuals with Autism. We love their mission so much. So many people want to walk for Autism Speaks, etc., but they literally give nothing to individuals with Autism.

I've donated to them, great organization. A friend of mine has raised a bunch of money for them in the past.
