Family watching DC and money

Can anyone share how much they pay a family member to watch your DC in their home?

Is it per hour? Weekly rate? Extra if you work late? How many hours?

thanks in advance!

Re: Family watching DC and money

we live in Westchester and my MIL lives in Bayside and she commutes to us 3 days a week. We just pay her $25/day which covers tolls and gives her a little spending money.

Re: Family watching DC and money

My mom watches dd twice a week and my aunt watched her twice a week. Thankfully they do not accept any money from us. But we do get them very nice gifts for all the holidays and birthdays.

I would ask your family what they had in mind, most time when family offers to watch the kids they are doing it so you don't have to pay what you normally would with a stranger, JMO

My SIL will be watching our DD in a couple of weeks. She lives 20 mins away and will be coming to our home.

The hours will be 7 to 4 and we will give her $300 a week ($60 a day). I also said that I will pay her half ($30) for any day that I am off and don't need her to come like President's Day but can't pay her for a day where she can't make it because I will have to use a back-up sitter.

Can I ask if those of you who have family watch your DC provide lunch or other food?

Re: Family watching DC and money

My mom and mil each watch dc 2 afternoons for 2-5 hours. They don't except any money. They know they are welcome to help themselves to any food in the house. My mil is even nice enough to bring food here on Tuesdays for us to heat up for dinner.

My Grandmother comes to my home (About 10 mins from her house) Mon-Fri 7am - 4:30pm.

Every Thursday my MIL comes up from NC (1 hr drive) and relieves my Grandmother around 11am.

We pay my Grandmother $500/month

We pay MIL nothing.

Re: Family watching DC and money

My parents watch ds 3x a week for us (about 25 hours) in their home & they'll occasionally watch him later or on a random extra day for us if needed. They give him his meals, but we supply all of the other necessities such as his crib, car seats, PNP & swing (when he was younger), toys, diapers, etc. & we pay for a 1x a week Parent/Tot program to get them out of the house. We also give them between 5-7 weeks off per year - thanks to dh's big bank of vaca days at his job we can do this pretty easily.

They won't accept any cash from us, but will luckily allow us to ease our consciences by letting us take care of them in other ways a few times a year. For instance we buy them at least 2 round-trip premium economy plane tixx to England a year so that they can go to to see my brother & niece (they usually go for 3 weeks at a time). We also paid for 1/2 of their last cruise w/us & secretly upgraded their room from an inside cabin to a balcony on the cruise prior to that. For some reason they still feel bad taking these "gifts" but thankfully they do (usually after I convince them that we're still coming out way ahead compared to what daycare would cost us).

I know that's probably not much of a help, but if your family member gives you a tough time about paying them I just wanted to let you know there are some alternatives Chat Icon

My mom watched my son 2x a week and I gave her $400 a month. Money was never discussed, I just gave it to her.

Mine won't accept. I give them a "present" like a vacation every so often as a thank you.

Re: Family watching DC and money

My mom comes to my house 5 days/week for about 8 hours/day to watch my 20 month old. We give her $800/month. In a month my sister will be dropping off her 3 month old and will also give her $800. My sister and I both work in schools so we follow a school calendar.

My dad watches DS 4 days a weeks from 6:30am until 5:30 pm and 1 day from 6:30 until 2:30. He would never accept anything. So I booked him a 2 week trip to asia for Christmas. Ok, well he was going anyway but I told my mom that I was paying for it.

My parents watch my twins 3 days a week 8 till 3. I pay them $50 a day because I insisted. My sister lives in Florida and I feel bad that she doesn't have the opportunity for my parents to watch my nephew. So paying them makes me feel better. It still saves me a ton of money and gives me a piece of mind

Re: Family watching DC and money

My sister watches my DD. She comes to us; an hour to hour and a half commute.

Her hours are from 8:30 - 6 Mon to Thurs and she leaves earlier on Fridays (b/t 3:30 and 5).

We pay her what we would pay a daycare. About $1600 month. We also provide a metro card. She can eat / drink anything we have at home and has a joint credit card with me to purchase any food or for incidentals.

I trust her 100% and appreciate so much that my daughter is growing up with her auntie!

IMO just b/c family is taking care of your child does not mean that you should pay them less than a total stranger (unless they insist, of course).

ETA: We pay her 52 weeks a year. She gets any days off that we get and is off when we take vacations.

Re: Family watching DC and money

MIL watches my 2 DS's 5 days/week and we pay her $100. But we pay her year round so if DH is laid off or we have a week off for vacation she'll still get paid.
