EDITED for additional question in original post - My first stupid pregnancy question

At least I think it is Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

In the thread, What's the first thing you are going to do after you have your LO?, some people said have a Diet Coke or a Pepsi. Are we not supposed to have soda at all? I know that the caffeine is no good, but if you have caffeine-free soda, isn't it okay?

EDIT - So from what most of you are saying, the concern is the artificial sweeteners, not so much the caffeine. I was told that the only artificial sweetener than I had to avoid was Saccharin (sweet and low)

I eat Yoplait light yogurt all the time, like once a day, which is sweetened with aspartame. Is this something that I should not be eating?

Ugh, I wish I had been a better eater before, it would make it so much easier to know what to eat. I am so dumb about this stuff. I was obese before getting pregnant, so obviously I was not making good choices for myself. And now, I am trying to do my best to eat healthy for this baby and I figure light yogurt is good for me. Apparently not.

What do you girls eat?

Re: My first stupid pregnancy question

as far as I know you're just not supposed to have Caffeine so I've cut it out completely. No coffee, tea, pepsi/coke, or energy drinks. The only thing I allow myself is a sprite or Sierra Mist if I'm really craving a soda. I know carbonated in general isn't the best so I don't have it often, but once in a while a non-caffeinated soda is fine (as far as I know).

After my D&E when I was coming out of anesthesia,I asked the recovery room nurse for a glass of sangria! Chat Icon Does that answer your question?! Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: Oops sorry I thought you were asking what's the first thing you will do after having your LO ... To answer your caffeine question- I didn't have any while I was pregnant. I was never a coffee or soda drinker so it wasn't that hard for me.

Under 200mg a day of caffeine. It's also in chocolate. It's ok, just don't crazy with it.

Re: My first stupid pregnancy question

You're supposed to shy away from artificial sweeteners in addition to caffeine. Regular soda is just empty calories and diet soda has a lot of artificial "stuff" in it, so I was told to limit it to the equivalent of one can a day.

I'm not much of a soda drinker, but I still have a diet ginger ale from time to time (or even a regular one). It was extremely worth it in the first trimester when I was sick all the time. I went through a bit of a cream soda craze... Chat Icon

I think it was the "diet" part they were referring to. If you're going to drink soda, it's best to drink the regular not the diet. Diet uses artificial sweeteners which are discouraged during pregnancy. Caffeine too of course, but just no diet, or try to stay away anyway. If you have the choice between sprite and diet sprite, choose the regular.

Re: My first stupid pregnancy question

It's the diet part- not the caffeine.
My Dr actually instructed me to drink one caffeinated beverage a day - due to my kidney stone issues. But if he was telling me to drink caffeine in moderation- how bad could it be?
And my baby came out 100% perfect.

The artificial sweetners is what you should avoid.
Although I used Splenda like it was going out of style while preggo and never had an issue.

Re: My first stupid pregnancy question

Some say to avoid caffeine completely, some say you can have some. It's really your choice I believe. With soda, you can have caffeine free sodas, like ginger ale, sprite, 7up...but it's more for the sugar I think. I'm a big soda drinker but I've stopped and started drinking either seltzer or ginger ale if my nausea is bad.

Re: My first stupid pregnancy question

I've been drinking regular soda throughout my entire pregnancy. I normally drink diet but after reading about avoiding artificial sweeteners I stopped that. I have a few glasses of soda a week... specifically orange soda which I have been craving!! Most doctors will tell you that one cup of coffee/tea/soda a day is fine.

Re: My first stupid pregnancy question

I still drink caf - the doctor said under 200 mg per day is fine but keep in mind it is in coffee, tea, chocolate, some sodas, etc. Drink a regular vs. diet soda because of the artificial sweetener

I am an avid diet coke drinker and my doctor said I should limit it to 1 a day, but that 1 was fine.

Re: My first stupid pregnancy question - EDITED for additional question in original post

I mostly eat greek yogurt with some sort of fruit in it.

I don't read labels. I try to be smart about my choices, but I'm really not too worried about it. Stress is less healthy than anything so try not to stress this!!!! Just talk to your OB at your next appointment and see what he/she says. It's most important that you listen to your doctors than to the rest of us preggos.

ITA!

This is what I have been doing:

-If I crave soda, I will drink a regular soda..even if it has caffeine in it. I have cut out coffee so the 65 mg of caffeine in regular soda is ok.

-For breakfast I have been eating a lot of fruit instead of Yogurt but that's mainly because I was never a yogurt person. Another good breakfast food is cereal

-For lunch I usually stick to leftovers or a salad. I was never really a sandwich eater and if I am craving a turkey sandwich or a roast beef sandwich then I will eat it!

-Snacking: I am a big snacker but I have tried to start healthy snacking even before I got PG. Kashi makes delicious cookies, granola bars are good, nuts, pretzels, the occasional candy bar, ice cream (but I have been buying skinny cow ice cream cones and they are delicious)

Re: EDITED for additional question in original post - My first stupid pregnancy question

I drink alot of water and club soda, but i certainly enjoy a can of regular coke daily. And a few times a week i have regular coffee with sugar and milk. My dr did not say to avoid these. I also eat low fat yogurt with sweeteners occassionally, and a diet snapple here and there. I think if you balance everything, and not be excessive about it, you will be just fine

I read the box and didn't see any of the artificial sweetners that I know...maybe I missed it.

This is from the label on the cones that I eat:

skim milk, cone [wheat flour, sugar, palm oil, soy lecithin, caramel color, salt], sugar, corn syrup, cone coating [sugar, coconut oil, salatrim, cocoa powder, soy lecithin, artificial flavor], fudge topping [high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, water, cocoa processed with alkali, sugar, modified corn starch, salt, mono and diglycerides, vanilla, natural flavor, artificial flavor], polydextrose, cocoa processed with alkali, whey protein, calcium carbonate, cream, Inulin (Dietary Fiber), natural flavor, Propylene Glycol Monostearate, microcrystalline cellulose, Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose, guar gum, monoglycerides, carob bean gum, sorbitol, vitamin A palmitate, carrageenan, salt

Yes it's the artificial sweetners.
My Dr said Splenda was ok though since it's made from real sugar.
Sweet and Low should be avoided (Sacharin) and Equal (aspartame) should be had in moderation.
Read the labels on the diet stuff you eat- some contain splenda (sucralose) but most have either Sacharin or aspartame.

And try not to stress too too much.
I broke almost every single 'rule' out there and had a perfectly healthy baby.
Just use common sense and moderation- which is smart advice pregnant or not! Chat Icon

I try to stay away from caffeine as much as possible anyway because it makes my heart race. They also want you to stay away from caffeine because it dehydrates you.

I would switch to an organic yogurt - something that does not have aspertame in it. I eat Stony Field Fat Free yogurt all the time. Love the Chocolate Underground flavor!

Re: EDITED for additional question in original post - My first stupid pregnancy question

Ya it seems that pretty much anything "light' or "diet" isn't really good.

I honestly don't think they even know what it can do for your baby. I stay away from all things light...or diet. none of that stuff is very natural..but you have to do what's right for you and see what your doc says.
