Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

DH is going to be starting his MBA in January at hopefully Fordham; he'll be going part time...his company pays so that's great....but I'm worried about how stressful this could be and I know it'll change our "us" time. Anyone else's DH do it? Or you?

itll be ok
Not the same situation but I went to undergrad full time and worked full time when I was going out with Anthony. And we dont live together. It was a little tough but doable....
What becomes necessary is the need to always communucate each others feelings...
No time to argue about the small stuff when your time is limited....

And this gives you time to pick up a new hobby

Re: Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

Mine...Last year, he was a full-time teacher and a full-time grad student. Its stressful, and requires a decent amount of effort to make time for "together time". A good chunk of our together time last year was researching for his papers and editing his papers. (That's why I'm on LIF so much - he's just not around!)

eta: I do it too - that's why I'm trying to cram as much wedding stuff as I can into this summer.

Re: Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

I do! I am finishing up my doctorate full time while working full time. My classmates always talk about how something has to give, and generally it is our "us" time and family time. I have had to miss countless birthdays, weddings, parties, etc. since my classes meet at nights and on weekends. DH has really helped out a lot, which has taken off a bit of the pressure. I couldn't be shopping, cleaning, cooking, going to school full time, teaching part time, and working full time. Chat Icon He helps with the cooking when I have class and grocery shopping. I would say just be really understanding and accomodating, and do whatever you can to make his life as stress-free as possible. For me I am just so excited that the end is in sight. I could never do this forever, but knowing it should all pay off is worth it. I also did my master's part-time while working full time, but that was before we got married.

When I worked on Wall Street I started taking classes for my MBA but could never get out of work on time to make it to class. Chat Icon I wound up having to drop classes even though they would have been paid for.

ETA: When I did my master's one or two classes a semester it wasn't bad at all. Going to 3 or 4 classes with the doctorate per semester made a big difference.

I worked full time and did school full time while planning my wedding. It was stressful, but you know that it is a temporary situation and there is an end in sight. In the end, hopefully his degree will help both of you in the future Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

I did it.
I took my MBA part time- about 2 classes a semester plus summer/winter sessions & I worked full time. I have to say it wasn't as bad as I anticipated. The majority of students work FT and most of the Prof's are sensitive to that issue. As a lot of the work is group work, there are lots of weekend meetings. WE always did AM meetings that way we had the rest of the w/e free. I can't say that getting my MBA was that big of an intrusion into my marriage.

We both worked FT and attended grad school FT. It definitely cut down on the us time, but it will be worth it.

I worked full time and went to grad school part time.

Time management is the key in my opinion! It's hard, but worth it in the end.

Re: Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

When we first got married I was finishing my masters full time, after working full time. It was rough, because we felt like we didn't have tons of time together. He actually took some classes at that time too, and worked a lot to keep busy. It goes fast, I wouldn't worry. You just have to make the most of your free time.

I just started Masters classes this summer. We both work FT plus my DH works a 2nd job at night. It's been tough, we do see each other less but I guess you could say it makes when we DO see each other better. Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

That's an important point--in my free time I am tempted to just sleep because I am so tired, but it is so important to DO stuff so it doesn't become boring, just sitting on the couch all the time. That happens to us when we don't make an effort.

Not the same situation but at one point in our relaitonship I was going to school part time and working full time and DH used to work nights and weekends. It was tough but you manage and it will be all worth it in the end.

Re: Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

I'll be doing it myself come January as well. My classes end at 10:05 p.m. (the latest) and I know it's going to take away time from DH, but in the end it'll be worth it both of us.

I did it. I worked full time and I also went to Fordham for my MBA. I went two nights a week. Classes end at 10:00. It wasn't too bad. I graduated August 2004. It took me 3.5 yrs. FM me if you have any questions. Good luck to your DH.

You will be ok and you will manage. My DH did this, as did I - we are both done now. It was hard, but not unbearable.

I know in the end it'll be totally worth it....I just wished we lived closer to the city so it wouldn't be so hard on him!

We both have hectic schedules as well. I go to school full time and work part time and he has a demanding job which requires a lot of his time. Things always have a way of working out and you'll be surprised at just how fast the time will go. Before you know it, he'll be finished with school. Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

I worked full time (NYC special ed teacher) and went back to school in January after having my daughter in October. This was the first time that I had been in school since 2000 Chat Icon but I got accepted into a program where the city would pay for half of my master's and then give me 25% OFF for the rest of it.

I finished 15 master's credits in one semester, worked full time, and had a baby. It is DEFINATELY possible -- it's just a lot of work. But then you get through it and say Whew, thank GOD that is over!

Re: Does anyone else's DH work full time and attend graduate school?

I worked FT while getting my MBA and it wasn't too bad for us bc DH was in law school PT. So we spent a lot of time in the library together.

It can definitely put a strain on your relationship. By the time I finished he still had 2 more years of school. I think bc I knew what it was like to be in school while working, I was a little more understanding and patient. If your DH manages his time right and makes time for you two to spend together everything should be fine.

My DH does it. It is a little difficult when he is in school, but we do make time to spend together. He's almost done - one more semester! Thank god - I dont think I could take it too much longer after the twins arrive.
