I have a Verizon landline and I can't make any calls without dialing 1516 first. Is this something new?

Same with my parents. They switched to verizon a few weeks back.

So odd! I wonder if it's just a Verizon thing? It must have just changed today for me, bc it was fine yesterday.

It's always been like that. You always need the 1+ area code when dialing out of yours.

Oh yes I know that, but now I need to dial 516 when dialing another 516 number from my house phone. I live in Nassau.

Yes with Verizon. But the 1 isn't necessary. It has to do with the dinner optic/digital system they have. At least that's what I was told when we got Verizon 2.5 years ago.

Has it been that way the whole time you've had it or is it something new? We've had Verizon about 3-4 years and today is the first day I have to do it.

After we switched to the digital setup, we've had to dial the same area code that we're in (631). At work, we went to a VoIP system (digital), so it's the same thing at work.

We switched to Verizon a few months ago, and now we have to do it also. It's annoying because I have to reprogram all of the numbers in my phone's memory so I can call people now!

Yes. We have Verizon for home phone. Took some time to get used to it, but now it's easy.

Verizon just told me today that the only people who don't have to dial the area code are customers that have had them a while and they get charged extra taxes on it.. I was surprised to hear that.

This.
I always had Verizon for my home phone but when I switched to FiOS last month I got a new calling plan and now we have to do 10 digit dialing...even within our area code.
It's kind of annoying and I always forget!

I don't think it is new. They told us awhile back only landlines do not need to. If you have FIOS then the digital makes you dial the 516. A pain but we have been doing it for 3.5 yrs and used to it.

If you have the digital voice Verizon you have to. If you have the old one you don't need to

Yup it's true. We had fios since we moved in 7 years ago and had the old voice.
About a year ago they talked us into the new digital voice and since then we had to do 10 digit dialing.

to me it's normal because i came from brooklyn, and for as long as i can remember you have always had to dial 1 (area code), but with verizon fios it has been like this since before 2006
