Yes, when I watch stupid game shows like Millionaire & Jeopardy I feel like a complete dope when it comes to History. And I got an A in post WWII history in college. I don't remember a blessed thing from that classChat Icon

i'm such a loser for any type of history---american, european, ancient, etc. love it all.

but i tend to feel like people see me as a super geek when those shows are on and i know the answers or i reference something like that among a group of people. Chat Icon

I hate history. My dh makes fun of me for it. I just never had an interest when I was younger.

I am a social studies teacher and really love American history. It's some thing nice that DH and I share.

When I was starting out teaching I was so scared a student would ask something I didn't know. Even now I know more about somethings than others. The BEST refresher out there that is also fun to read is:

Don't know much about Hisotry by Kenneth Davis. I try to tell my students that history is a story and it can be a lof fun. Hope somone enjoys this book.

Re: do you ever feel like you know nothing about American History?

I can get by, but ask me anything detailed and it has probably leaked out of my brain. I can hold on to science and math, because it makes sense, but memorization? I'm like a goldfish.

My DH thinks I'm crazy because I can watch the same movie 10x and still enjoy it ...well if it's been a few months since I have seen it, I have probably forgotten most of it. Chat Icon

I like the history channel, DH calls it the Hitler channel since they seem to focus a lot on WWII

Re: do you ever feel like you know nothing about American History?

oh, just watch the history channel (and history international) every night. I used to dislike history, but then I realized how it REALLY is sociology.... history is written from the perspective of the 'winners', and every account is very biased.... It's the biases that I find amusing.... now I'm a history channel addict.

I especially love archaeology shows that descibe evidence that contradicts commonly accepted historical accounts... It amuses me to no end how human nature taints everything...

one especially fascinating tale.... the pilgrams first settling in plymouth. Read the journal of William Bradford (he was their leader) and you'll find out very interesting (and almost movie-like drama at some points) interactions with the native tribes and europeans....

journal of william bradford

I knew NOTHING about our history until I met DH - who is a HUGE history buff. I wouldn't say I am an expert, but I know a lot more now.

Re: do you ever feel like you know nothing about American History?

I am thankful for a husband who is extremely into history like me. I love going to museums. We have been to the National Civil War museum in PA which is so amazing! It is so sad when you see the exhibits of what our soldiers had with them or how young they were. Or how the slaves were sold. Mother and sisters holding onto each other while people bid on them. It is extremely moving.

There are so many places on Long Island that contain history. At Raynham Hall Museum there is a letter from George Washington when he was governor. Or having George Washington come to my hometown in Patchogue! I might seem like a dork. But I just love learning about the past and knowing it happened in your back yard.
