Do LI districts like teachers from NYC?

I am really going to look next year to get out of NYC. I have heard conflicting reports from people that districts on LI don't like teachers from NYC and would rather have people just out of college. By next year I will be tenured and have had 3+ year of teaching experience in NYC plus a cert in literacy.

YES!!!!! I think getting out between 3-6 years is your best bet. And being certified in literacy will really give you an edge.

Donegal419 gave me great advice- around January start looking at the Sunday Time's job section. OLAS also has listings as well.

I have the addresses of all the districts in LI- feel free to FM if you want them!
good luck!

I think that LI districts like teachers from NYC. I know that in my district we have hired a bunch of teachers that started out in the city.

Honestly, I think it depends on who you talk to and the particular district. Some really like them - figuring if they can handle NYC, they can handle anything.

Others think NYC teachers can be too set in their ways, and after a certain point - become very expensive new hires. Some districts like a new teacher that they can "mold" into what they want.

I agree. My district definitely prefers to higher people with experience rather than people right out of college.

Yes, kathleen they do!!! Chat Icon I was lucky and got out of NYC after only a year (the commute was killing me, otherwise i really liked it)... but my dsitrict really liked my expereince there....

Also, depending on how long your with the city, be prepared to negiotate your salary step. a girl i know in my district had 10 years in the city... the district said they couldn't afford to hire her at step 10 with a masters so they gave her credit only for 4 years of experience. she took it though because it was still more money than she was making in the city.

as MrsYank said... you have to start in january or February... OLAS, NYTimes, ANYONE you know, people on this site, anywhere that can give you leads. My school had all their interviews and hires DONE by mid-May.

I agree - I wouldn't say that my LI district that I just left necessarily liked NYC teachers...

I feel like a lot of LI principals started in the city, so I assume they would like city teachers-:)

Someone told me that they like to get NYC teachers that have only been working a few years before they are set in their ways. Who knows.
