Did anyone hire a baby nurse/ night time help?

Ive been considering hiring someone for the first few weeks to help with the nights. Anyone else have this? If you dont mind saying, how much did you pay them? What did they do for you?

TIA

i didn't hire anyone, but i have my parents here for a month...its a blessing and horrible at the same time. theyve been great about wanting to help me sleep so ive pumped bottles for them to feed my son...but im missing out on that extra time with my son and i often wake up engorged and in pain - i've been trying to take the nights back but they are adamant that they take him at night - u can guess the frustration.

it may be different with a nurse b/c she's not related to you or your child and you won't have too many frustrating arguements...if i coudl control the situation, i would have my parents visit but stay at a hotel or something b/c 1 month in the same house...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon u get the pic.

if u feel like u really need the help - go for it, but i've found that waking with him and napping when he naps is better than having me sleep through the night

No, and I don't think a baby nurse would have made the first few weeks easier. What would have been a big help was to have someone come in and do the day-to-day stuff like cleaning, grocery shopping, laundry, etc.

Re: Did anyone hire a baby nurse/ night time help?

I had a baby nurse for two weeks when the baby was born. I will ABSOLUTELY do it again with my next child.

She was a huge help in letting me rest (esp. at night), teaching me what I needed to know, and I am sure I was so successful at nursing because of her.

I can't remember exactly what I paid - but they run around $180-200 a day give or take a little.

Mine didn't cook (but some do). She did however do the laundry, come with me to dr. appt's, and do whatever else I needed as far as the baby was concerned.

If you have any more questions or need recommendations please feel free to FM me!

totally agree!

and if you plan on BFing, you are still going to have to get up at night frequently, so I am not sure how much help the nurse can be regarding sleep.

Yes! It was a g-dsend. I had a baby nurse for two weeks and paid 1500 + 500 tip. She did everything for my baby, including his laundry. I only had to bf him and heal from my c-section. She did not cook for us or clean for us - but she did everything the baby needed.
i.e. bathed, clothed, changed diapers, changed linnens, cared for circumsion, taught me to bathe him, held him, stayed up with him all night, got him into a sleep schedule.

Thanks, I really think that having someone around to help out with feedings, cook, and do laundry would make life a lot easier for everyone involved. I never even thought of them coming to appts with me, but that would be great too, considering dh has to work.

Re: Did anyone hire a baby nurse/ night time help?

I actually have one here right now and I had one with my first...
She sleeps here and does everything for the baby (except feed her since I am BFing)...
It's such a big help considering I have a 20 month old.
I got her thru an agency and it's $175/day.

It definitely helps since last night DD was up for a while in the middle of the night and the nurse was with her, I was sleepingChat Icon

No - but I wish I did for 2 weeks. That was the roughest part and I will definitely look into for #2.

I did and it was a godsend. I would do it again in a heartbeat with my second. I really got rest while she was here. I didn't let her do everything since I wanted to learn but I could have - and she would have taken care of the baby for the entire time. If you need a recommendation, let me know. I loved my baby nurse.

I have never even heard of this! I have had 3 babies and I don't see a need for this. I guess I had "easy" babies though. I didn't even have help from any family or friends. It might be easier than you are excepting.

I don't see the need either. I guess if you had multiples and you really needed the help then yeah. But if you are just doing it to get rest, well then heck, you'll need a baby nurse for a few months because they don't sleep through the night for a while Chat Icon Not to mention, I don't think I would want someone doing everything for my beautiful little baby. I think being invovled in every aspect of a baby's daily routine is all part of the bonding experience Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone hire a baby nurse/ night time help?

My mom came and was a huge help...but without her, I could totally see hiring a nurse. BFing in the beginning was so exhasting. I totally benefited from my mother taking the baby after I fed him so I could go back to sleep.

Showering and eating were also made easier during my mother's attendence.

That's not 100% fair to say. Yes, I was doing it to get rest but it was also for my sanity. Personally, I need sleep. I get very anxious without it and having a baby nurse for 10 days helped me regain a little bit of sleep so when she did left, I was better able to handle a newborn who cried most of the day and night. And as soon as she left, it was all me (with DH helping but he had to get up and work). Coming from a mom who's baby didn't sleep more than 2 hours at a time for a good 2 months, I NEEDED this help. And I didn't just hand over my baby to a nurse - I actually wanted to have the nurse show me what to do. Unfortunately, I didn't have my mom or another relative close by that could have helped. People who do are lucky, however, I would probably have still wanted a baby nurse. So just a perspective from someone who had one.

Well, I had no help from relatives, etc since none live nearby. I'm a single parent so it's been just me from day one. But, I see where you are coming from Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone hire a baby nurse/ night time help?

We had a baby nurse, and I did see a need for it. She did many things for DD, but the most helpful was the support for breastfeeding, since DD was really bad at latching on. She had practical advice, and also encouragement. I don't know that I would have stuck with BFing if I didn't have the help.

Something to consider, which is impossible to know in advance, is how you will feel after giving birth- physically and emotionally. Some people may bounce back in 2 days, but I know that I tore badly, and needed many stitches. I could barely walk, and so the help of the nurse being able to lift DD, bathing and changing her, and bringing her to me to BF was really wonderful. My DH went back to work quickly, and I didn't have family to help, so having her really helped us.

I think we paid about $2000 for 2 weeks, and found her through a recommendation of a friend.

Re: Did anyone hire a baby nurse/ night time help?

I had one for 24 hours to cover the night before and some of the night after the baby's bris. She came back a few days later to help remove the gauze. She is an RN and she charges $25 an hour. I talked to some baqby nurses who charged a lot less but I liked her. I am now glad that I did not have someone in my house for an extended period during my first few weeks home. I needed to find my way with just DH and the baby. I had a very difficult time and a difficult recovery but I am not sure if a nurse would have made a difference. My DH did a lot.

ITA! I personally wouldnt want a stranger staying with me taking care of my baby. However, I can see needing one if you have a c-section or a rough recovery and do not have anyone to help. To be honest, I never even heard of baby nurse's until I joined LIF. I come from a pretty large family and noone in my family ever hired anyone to help them...if I ever told my parents or grandmother that I wanted to hire a nurse they would probably laugh at me! It definetely would not go over well. They follow the old school mentality, we all took care of our babies, you can take care of yours.

ITA!!!

It's so hard to respond without sounding judgmental...BUT this is my own personal take on it...

If you've had a terrible recovery with no help around you then I understand a baby nurse.

Otherwise, I think it is money out the window! Women have been having babies for years and years and figuring it out for themselves. What better way to learn about your baby and patterns and all the good stuff than to do it yourself?

My baby nurse was my husband. Lol. He helped with feedings, changing, letting me sleep. Never in my life did I dream of hiring and paying someone to do what we were very capable of doing.

I know I sound harsh, I just think long island is a different world...but then again my whole family is on long island and everyone has had multiple kids and never needed a nurse. I too never heard of a baby nurse before LIF!
