Cuomo free college announcement

Cuomo announced today his proposal a free college tuition plan (state colleges) for those families making less than $125,000 a year. It just needs to be approved by the Legislation.

I think this is great but I would like to see it given to all NY State Residents regardless of income. Just because a parent has the means doesn't mean they are going to pay for their child's education so all should be given the same chance. But regardless, a great step in the right direction.

If you think your taxes are high now..just wait..we will be heading towards 50-55% taxation now. Just like in Europe.

Get ready!

Im sorry, I am generally VERY liberal but NO WAY am I paying for the bulk of this state to go to college. NO WAY. People will quit their jobs to drop their income if it will save the save them the same amount as the tuition they would have been paying.

Im sorry, go to community for 2 years and then do 2 years at 4 year SUNY if you need to save money for college.

I wish SUNY did have that program where you can lock in the current rate and prepay for your childs education, now THAT I could get on board with.

Other states do it and the amount of waste that is in NYS budget is a joke. The State needs a complete financial overhaul. As a state school if you are a resident I see no problem with getting free tuition. As far as the comment about people quitting there jobs to get the tuition for free, I agree and that I why it should be for all, like I mentioned and not have a caveat of a financial cap.

I'm surprised by the comments as this was a cornerstone of Bernie's campaign and I do not remember any objections to it then. Hillary is even giving it praise.

Yes, this is wonderful in my opinion! It only benefits our economy and standard of living when all of our citizens are able to attain a higher education and properly educated. You can't get a decent paying job today with a high school diploma. This is in everyone's best interest and it levels the playing field so our best and brightest are able to succeed even if they are economically disadvantaged. But I do hope we will tax Wall St and close tax loopholes on the very wealthy in order to fund this. If not, I'm willing to pay some more in taxes to support this.

OP- I thought you were a Donald supporter, I'm surprised you are in favor of this measure.

I'm mostly curious to know whether there will be a minimum GPA students need to maintain in order to get free tuition for subsequent years. As a high school teacher, I see a lot of people's money spent on students who don't want to be there. I believe in free and public education, but I don't personally want kids to drink themselves stupid @ SUNY Albany, skip classes, and fail on my dime. Freshman retention is poor at most colleges for this reason.

If the kids are motivated and working, then I am happy to help subsidize because I think it's good for society, especially considering what we spend to put people in jail...

Great idea BUT...I can totally see people claiming less. Esp. those with cash businesses. I see how people do it for free lunch in school. But they have beautiful luxury cars. People find a way to scam the system. So there needs to be some things set in place.
For all NYS residents. NOT paid for by our pennies. GPA standards. And maybe a work study program where the students 'volunteer' their time.

I think it's great, but it's too bad there is an income cap. $125k a year is not very much living on Long Island.

I really hope this doesn't go through.

If it does, I sure hope there is a high gpa requirement, along with mandated work study hours

That being said,I feel as if this will only work to make it even more difficult to get into suny schools.

My questions as well. And in my opinion, they are going to have to make their admissions requirements much stricter.

My daughter is a junior and her reaction was this: "Great, now every dumb moron can go to college right along side me. Why did I bother taking all these AP classes and getting a 4.0 GPA when now everyone can just go?" I thought it was interesting.

I believe college was once free, Brooklyn college years ago.

I wonder how many people from other countries will apply for student visa, set up residence in NY for free education

I am a Republican not a Donald Supporter : ). I just don't think he is the Antichrist like many do on these boards.

I may align a lot of my views on the Republican side but I am all for things that help the majority of the people as long as it is fair to all, hence why I think there should be no financial cap.

SUNY schools are not easy to get into so good for her for working so hard. Anyone who's going to be accepted would be doing the same. Any "moron" would be able to go to a community school but that's already the case.

Does anyone know what SUNY tuition is approximately?

I don't think it's so much that people will be quitting their jobs to get free tuition for their kids. If you really make less than that tuition where it would be worth it I highly doubt you can afford to lose the income.

I don't think a dumb moron didn't go to college because they can't afford it. A dumb moron didn't go to college because they can't get into college because of their grades. The admission requirements should be the same and hopefully the free tuition will motivate people to learn, as the possibility of a college education is possible now.

Bernie supporters were blinded by ignorance to even see this. I wouldn't want to fund this with my tax dollars. Bernie also wanted to remove the Social Security income cap, so anybody making over 115k would be taxed an additional 6-7%. Bernie was going to tax the living shit out of everbody. Thank god he didn't get elected.

This has zero chance of passing anyways. Cuomo needs to stick with fixing the decrepit LIRR and MTA system. Or even better a convenient scandal needs to find Cuomo so his ass can get ousted out the same way Mangano and Venditto will go, with DeBlasio hopefully not far behind. I would call kicking those four out of office the "grand slam of politics".

https://www.suny.edu/smarttrack/tuition-and-fees/

NY Resident on-campus / NY commuter / Out of State resident
Tuition
$6,470 / $6,470 / $16,320
Student Fees
$1,590 / $1,590 / $1,590
Room and Board
$12,590 / $3,860 / $12,590
TOTAL DIRECT COSTS
$20,650 / $11,920 / $30,500

I guess they figure the "room and board" for a commuter is how much the student will need for buying their own food during the school day? Without that (which obviously wouldn't be covered by NYS), the annual tuition is around $8k

Student fees probably aren't covered, just tuition, and the State's input would be after all Federal and State grants were given out, so there are some students who technically wouldn't get anything because they already qualified for other grants.
I couldn't find out a lot of details yet about the fine print, so it's hard to give a full opinion on this, but it seems like a good idea on the surface.
