Crib Transition hell over here. My daughter has been sleeping in the rock n play. But she is now 7.5 months and its time to get her in her crib. (I KNOW I KNOW no judgement please I was going through a lot of other stuff and mentally couldn't handle rocking the boat any further than it was rocked)

I tried at 4 months and 6 months with no luck. I honestly gave up and didn't try that hard.

Well Im trying again and this time is worse than any other time. I realize it probably has to do with the fact that shes older.
She doesn't sleep more than 30 min and keeps waking and crying. The crib is elevated. I even took the rock n play bedding and put it in the crib. I am going to try rolling up some towels to put around her to create that snug feeling. That's the last thing I can think of.

Does anyone have any other advice before I start doing overnights? I am mentally preparing myself that overnight is going to suck and I do believe in cry it out. BUT I also have another child to think about (6 year old) whose room is next door so I don't know how to handle that beyond raise the volume on her sound machine. And probably wait until the weekend when she doesn't have school to try.

I wouldn't put bedding or towels around her, because it's a potential suffocation risk.

Maybe try a sleep sack, if you're not already. Does she roll yet? If not, maybe try a swaddle sleep sack for a few nights to give her a more snuggled feeling. If she is rolling, you may just need to give her time to get comfortable and realize she can roll over and sleep on her stomach, which will give her a more snuggled/secure feeling.

Can you do the crib for naps when your 6 year old won't be affected? That could be a good transition before overnights.

Re: Crib Transition

I think you just need to have a couple of rough nights and she’ll adjust and that’ll be it. Don’t give in by putting her back into the rock n play. I wouldn’t put any bedding or towels in the crib.. still a suffocation hazard at her age. I agree with using a sleep sack for her to feel more contained. Definitely do it on a Friday night in case your 6 year old is kept awake.

All this. Just don't give up. It's ok to let your baby cry a little. I promise it's harder on you than the baby.

Re: Crib Transition

We used a swaddle to transition from rock and play to bassinet and it worked. Now we tire him out and feed him to get him to sleep and use a sleep sack.

Re: Crib Transition

I found that my dd2 who was somewhat resistant liked cozy sheets (flannel or thick comfy jersey) better than the regular smooth cotton ones.

the baby merlin magic sleep suit. When i transitioned DD to the crib from the rock and play, this was the only thing that worked

My first one had a hard time transitioning from the RnP. I did the magic sleep suit. I also elevated the crib mattress slightly and put a boppy pillow around LO, so it was the shape of a U. The boppy would be around his bottom half. It gave him that sense of security and snuggle like the RnP.
I also agree with the pp. Be consistent even if it's a few nights of torture. After about 11 days my LO finally started to sleep long stretches in the crib (even though he was STTN in the RnP).

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Re: Crib Transition

Just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone. All of my kids hated the crib and wouldn’t sleep in it. We tried everything to get my oldest in there and by night 5, he was up every 10-20 minutes all night long. We gave up. He co-slept with us and it was the only way we all got some sleep. We had a brief period of success in the crib as an older infant with DH rocking him to sleep and only putting him down after he was in a deep sleep, but once he cut his first teeth, he totally regressed. It wasn’t the ideal situation and I never planned on co-sleeping, but it worked for us. My other kids also co-slept at different points.

You know your child best and what will work. Do naps work in the crib? Is it an issue to lie flat? Can you get your child to initially fall asleep in the crib? Is it that you’re not there when she wakes up? If you think CIO will work with your child, then I’d just raise the volume of the white noise machine for your older one so it doesn’t disturb her. Good luck with whatever you decide. Chat Icon
