Cradle Cap?

Unfortunately, my DS has cradle cap, lots of dry, flaky scales on his scalp.

For those who have dealt with this:

How often did you shampoo?
What did you use to treat it?

I was using mineral oil with a comb followed by shampoo twice a week, but it is only worse now. Should I wash his hair more often than this?

I've also started leaving his hat off when we are indoors, since I read online that hats can make it worse.

Thanks!

Re: Cradle Cap?

Someone on here posted to try olive oil before shampooing. We did it one time and it cleared up the cradle cap for several weeks. It is slowly coming back now (maybe because she wears a hat when we go outChat Icon ) but I plan on trying the olive oil again. I just combed it through her hair and left it on for a few mins then gave her a bath as usual and I couldn't believe what a difference it made. HTHChat Icon

Re: Cradle Cap?

I've read about the olive oil on here too but haven't tried it yet. DD is 7 months and still has it, slightly. Doc said not to fuss with it and it really isn't that noticeable b/c of her hair, but I'd still like to see if I can gently help it leave!

Re: Cradle Cap?

Our pediatrician told us to shampoo only three times a week and to put baby oil in for a while beforehand. Then, once a week for us to use neutrogena tgel. I stopped doing the baby oil this week, but I plan on using the tgel once in a while, if i see flakes again.

was it gross and greasy? Did it come out right away? I use the winnie the pooh eczema shampoo but might try the olive oil...sounds strange but whatever works.

Re: Cradle Cap?

We used the Burt's Bees oil & it worked really well. We washed every other day when he has it.

Re: Cradle Cap?

Our Dr said NOT to use baby oil (which I had been using). He said to massage Troy's head whien we shampooed it, and then brush off the flakes. I bought the Winnie the Pooh Cradle Cap cream (sold in BRU) and I use it before I wash his hair. I massage it in, try and brush some out and then I wash his hair and brush it again after his bath. We wash every other day, sometimes every two days (when he gets a bath).

I don't know if this is "bad" or not, but I pick the scales/flakes off sometimes while I am giving him his bottle. I can usually only get a little off, as it bothers him. I am careful not to scrape hard though.

Re: Cradle Cap?

use olive oil and let it sit for a few mins then use a comb and comb it the opposite way flakes will come up.. you may have to do it 2x but it works. i did this with my DD and her scalp looks beautiful now.

Re: Cradle Cap?

Olive Oil works the best for me!

We brushed it on with a basting brush, let it sit for 10 mins or so, then combed it out with fine tooth comb in all directions. With both girls we only had to do it once and it never came back.

It's oil, so it's oily when you do it, but it washes right out. I wash their twice right after just so i'm sure it's all out. It leaves their hair so soft too Chat Icon

Re: Cradle Cap?

my DD had it really bad, so I would put baby oil in her hair, let it seat there for 30 min or so, after that I would brush her hair really well and shampoo it with aveno baby shampoo , but when I did that I left the shampoo in her hair for few a min. or so and then rinse her head while brushing it, she was fine within 3 weeks , oh and I did that 2x a week , I still wash her hair 1 or 2 times a week.

Re: Cradle Cap?

Comb it out. I used baby oil or baby oil gel. Get a fine tooth comb and comb it out while he is in the tub. Let the baby oil soak in his head for a day or two. Once it is out keep his scalp moisterized. DS has not had any in a long time now but I still put Eucerin on his head twice a day.

Re: Cradle Cap?

we used olive oil and it worked like a charm. . . the comb I was using wasnt that good so I bought a metal comb used specifically to get rid of lice and nits. It made a big difference and I could not believe how much cradle cap came off. It was kinda gross, but after 1 treatment the cradle cap was gone.

Whatever works, maybe this will do it. The baby oil didn't seem to do the job for him.

Huh, I'll try the lice comb too. Just as well, his nice comb is probably going to get gross and greasy.

Thanks for the answers!
