Constitency of homemade baby food vs. jarred food?

I am making my own baby food for my DD (7.5 months). I cook the veggies, then puree them.

But I am finding that the constistency of the homemade food is chunkier than jarred food. I am not sure if this is normal.

For those of you who make baby food, how do you find the constitency of pureed food compares to the store bought jarred food? How smooth should the food be for a 7.5 month old?

As long as there are no chucks and your DC is OK with the consistency, it should be fine. In the beginning, I would add some water or formula to thin it out.

I actually think it's beneficial for them to have a chunkier texture to their baby foods. It gets them more used to textures for when they are on table food. As long as it's not so chunky that she can choke, I'd say leave it. Certain veggies just never got as smooth as jarred food, and I thought it was fine. She was on all table food by 8.5 months and I attribute it to the fact that I could thicken the purees up a little at a time by making my own.

But how do I know how chunky is too chunky? I am a little nervous b/c DD choked on her own saliva at 6 months old, and I mean REALLY choked, stopped breathing and the whole bit. So how do I know when chunks are too big?

ITA...DS eats EVERYTHING....and I attribute some of that to him having all sorts of textures at an early age...

if you add more liquid, you can smooth out the consistency.

depending on the fruit/veggie... I would add water to thin it out. If it got too thin, I would add some cereal (oatmeal).

I found the Earths Best jarred food to be too thin. Chloe would sort of slurp it up.

Sadie always liked her food a little thicker than the norm. You can just add water to thin it out if your DC is gagging

I think that at this point the chunks have to be super soft and about your pinky-tip sized. Liam eats puffs and LOVES them. He just mushes them with his gums since he has zero teeth and according to the doc, "no hope of getting any teeth any time soon!"Chat Icon

He also eats Pastina really well. The first night he gagged a bit but since then he eats it like a champ!

I pureed all of his food and I have TON in the freezer still. But, after seeing how well he did with puffs and pastina, I will be leaving it a bit chunkier next time. He is SOOO into table food and I don't know how longer he will eat purees. So honestly, leave it a bit chunky and she will be fine.
