constipated after c-section..
I know this is TMI but the last time I went to the bathroom was wednesday, the night before my c-section on thursday morning. I have not gone to the bathroom since nor do I have the urge. Ive been passing gas and I ate so many prunes and prune juice at the hospital and other fiber foods and no luck. How long does it take to get back to normal? Im so scared to keep eating.. i also started taking colace today and Ive taken 2 pills so far and nothing. Thanks ladies..

This is totally normal. They move all your bits and parts around so much that sometimes it takes a while to get back to normal. Keep taking the colace and drink lots of water.

Re: constipated after c-section..
With my daughter, I didn't pass a bowel until a week after I was home. I was scared but it was fine in the end ~~ sorry no pun intended.
But as Rach said everything has been moved around and jostled.
Lots of water!!

Re: constipated after c-section..
I had this issue too.... I hadn't gone to the bathroom since Sunday - had my C on Monday night, then didn't have a bowel movement til the following Monday....
It was bad for me tho... It took me an hour and a half for me to 'go'.... and I wound up

I had my C-section on a Thursday and didn't have a bowel movement until the following Thursday and when I did, OMG! Sorry, but I was so grateful afterwards and felt so much better!

Re: constipated after c-section..
DEFINITELY take a stool softener! It will help keep things moving along. Like others have said, it could take a week or so but it will eventually happen. The stool softeners will not make you go, it will just make it "easier" once you do go

Re: constipated after c-section..
Def take a stool softner. Colace worked great for me. I had it so bad that sometimes the pain made me cry. I should have told them when I left the hospital that I was having trouble but I didn't. I just wanted to get out of there. Never again.

Re: constipated after c-section..
I was really constipated after my c-section. I didn't know I should have been taking my colace while I was in the hospital.
This time I will remember to bring my colace with me and drink more water

Re: constipated after c-section..
I didn't have a c-section, but I was badly constipated while pregnant. Prunes didn't do it for me either.
What did work was drinking tons of water, metamucil, and getting some exercise (even mild exercise makes a difference). I've heard good things about colace too, but I didn't use it.
Good luck! No one wants to do this after delivering a baby.

Re: constipated after c-section..
The constipation after the c-section is one of the WORST parts about having a C-section, IMO.
I had my C on Monday, and finally went to the bathroom on Friday, the morning I was getting discharged. Thank g-d I was trying to go in the hospital b/c it took 2 hours and I ended up needing "assistance" from the nurse. Honestly, it was so bad, I was crying for almost an hour.
This is what I am least looking forward to next time around...

Re: constipated after c-section..
thank you ladies for your replies.. i was soooo worried and this morning I had the "urge" to go and it was fine.. thanks to colace! It was almost a weeks time since I last went and I came out of the bathroom today like a little kid saying, "Yay!! i pooped! woohoo!!" and I told my husband like 4 times.. as if this was my first potty ever! haha
