Christmas dinner: table cloth or just placemats?

How do you set your dining room table for the holidays? Table cloth? Placemats? Runner? Do you keep the runner on with placemats? This is my first time hosting a holiday and we just got our dining room set. We don't have a table pad or table cloth. I am wondering if I should at least buy the cloth or if just placemats and hot plates is sufficient. What do you think?

I usually use a tablecloth for holiday dinners for a few different reasons. I think it dresses the table up nicely and makes it look more formal and complete. Also, its a great way to catch those inevitable spills and stains (gravy anyone?) that always happen

I don't have to worry about anything scratching the surface of my very easily scratched table either Chat Icon

I would absolutely go with the table cloth! We've been hosting Thanksgiving for years and I can not even begin to tell you how disgusting the table cloths look by the end of the meal. People don't mean to be slobs but food spills, wine spills. I would hate to think of all that on your new dining set!

I got an awesome TG tablecloth at BBB right before TG - so hopefully they still have stock for Christmas... I need to get one too!

I got two table cloths - one for Christmas Eve and one for Christmas Day.

If you use a cloth, put a washable, smooth blanket under it to act as a pad. I keep an old white one just for such use. It prevents the table from getting dings in it from tableware, china or a platter being set down too sharply on it. A table cloth may soak up water, wine or gravy, but it offers little protection from bumps or things being dropped on it.

Re: Christmas dinner: table cloth or just placemats?

I have two tablecloths - a red one and a white one. We're going to need two tables out for Christmas, so I'm going to do on one table the red table cloth, a white runner, and white napkins. The other will have a white table cloth, red runner, and red napkins. I don't have enough of each to make everything the same, so I figure this is a good compromise.

Oh and you can buy the vinyl table pads at BBB for like $20. I just bought one specifically for Christmas.

I use a table pad on my dining room table with a tablecloth when we use it.

This year I got two matching tablecloths over at Kohls. They are pretty plain but are themed for the Holidays with holly branches...I'll put one on my dining table and one on my kitchen table as well...

My china is white so it goes with anything - and I use gold chargers for Christmas to dress things up a bit...

This is mine. If I was hosting dinner, I would put down a white table cloth under everything and still use trivets for really hot plates.

Table cloth because I wouldn't want someone ruining my table.

We also put a pad under the table cloth that we got at BBB.
