Brayden Drew! 12/3/10

Finally a month later I have found some free time to write my birth story! So here it goes Chat Icon

First, let me start by saying that when I first found out I was pregnant, not only did I say to DH that I KNEW it was a boy, but I said he will be born on 12/3, and sure enough he was. Yes I won my own baby pool too Chat Icon

My due date was 12/1.. I had an appointment that day and I was not dilated at all. However I left there in so much pain, they did an internal and did NOT take it easy on me. The next day at work I lost my mucous plug and I just knew that baby was on his way. On 12/3 at 1am I woke up to pee and was pretty bummed that I wasn't having any contractions, I really wanted him to come that day. I got back into bed and was tossing and turning to get comfy and all of a sudden my water broke! I jumped up and said to DH "my water broke!" and went into the bathroom to straighten my hair lol. He came in and was like "maybe you should call the Dr" hahaha. So we did and they sent us to the hospital right away since I had tested positive for Strep B.

Got to Stonybrook @ 2am and had to wait a little then went through triage. Finally they set me up in recovery since all the l&d rooms were full and started me on antibiotics for Streb B. Within minutes I turn to DH and said "get a nurse immediately" - he could tell I wasn't kidding and went running. By the time they were back (like 30 seconds) my entire face was red and swollen, my ears were double the size, and I was literally attempting to pull my hair out (my head was SO itchy). Turns out I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotics. Next thing I know I was pumped with so much Benadryl I couldn't keep my eyes open. They told me the on call Dr. was on his way and would be with me shortly. I was having contractions at that point but can not remember them from all the Benadryl. I was SO groggy. I really don't remember the next few hours. They decided it was too risky to give me antibiotics again at that point and I was finally moved up to l&d.

When I got to my room Dr. Okeefe (amazing Dr. by the way!) told me he was going to start me on pitocin to speed up my labor & told me to get an epi if I wanted it. OMG was the epi amazing. I swear I barely felt them put it in and after a few minutes it was heaven. They started me on pitocin after that since my water had broken many many hours ago & I was only 1cm dilated.

A few minutes go by and all of a sudden a bunch of people run into the room. I was flipped on my side, given oxygen & a shot of something in my IV. I had no idea what was going on. Turns out the baby's heart rate dropped very low. They turned off the pitocin and tried again a little while later. After the 2nd attempt the same thing happened, this time his heart rate dropped so low the Dr. pretty much had his entire arm inside of me moving the baby around (sorry TMI)...luckily with the epi I barely felt anything. At that point the Dr. said I was only 2cm dilated and he would try the pitocin one more time, very slowly. Dh went downstairs to get coffee and my mom came up to say hi. As I was telling her what happened she was looking at the monitors and asked which one was the babies heart rate. I told her which one it was and I saw on her face that something was not right.. within seconds I had the Dr. and about 15 other people in the room preparing me for an emergency c section. They told my mom to go get my DH and I was in the OR within 5 minutes. 20 minutes later my little man was born.

The c section was by far the weirdest experience of my life. I felt so much tugging and pulling and was just so unprepared for it. It all happened so quickly. I remember at one point turning to someone and telling them I was freaking out and couldn't breathe (of course I could since I was talking, but I really felt like I couldnt). They gave me something to calm me down and everything was pretty much a daze. I just remember looking at DH and all of a sudden hearing a baby cry....It took me a few seconds to realize it was mine. They showed him to me really quickly and DH got to hold him. Before I knew it I was in recovery holding my little man and breast feeding. He latched on immediately and has been an amazing eater ever since. I fell in love with him the second I saw him, he is truly amazing & my greatest accomplishment. I still look at him and cry (happy tears) at the insane love I feel for him.

When I was finally brought to the maternity ward my parents and sister and cousin were waiting and we all got to hang out with him for a little while. I have to say that Stonybrook is a beautiful hospital, it was like staying in a hotel.. the rooms were private & huge and everything was so peaceful and quiet. The nurses were AMAZING, I actually missed them after I left.

It was a crazy day but I would do it over again in a second for him. I actually keep saying how badly I want to rewind time to be able to hold him for the first time again <3

Anyhow, let me introduce my little man

Congratulations! Your baby boy is adorable!
I had a similar experience with a c-section - you're right, it's very weird.

Yes. I went to Three Village but he was the on call dr. that day. He was amazing. Within 5 minutes of meeting him I liked him better than any of the other dr's at three village that I spent months with. I was in good hands and he made sure my baby was healthy and safe. He got him out so fast. I thought it took 20 minutes but I was so drugged my husband told me in reality he had the baby out in 5 minutes! From the time I was wheeled to the OR and wheeled to recovery it was a total of 20 min. I think I am going to switch to him for the future.
