Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

At our last ped appt she said we can start anytime now trying to potty train, DS is 21 months. I don't know if I should start now since baby #2 is due in less than 2 months. DS tells us when he makes and asks for his diaper to be changed.

I wanted to see when the majority of you started to train your boys and if you were successful?

-Did you use any resources/techniques (books, dvds etc) to help out? We bought the Elmo potty training DVD.

Thanks for any advice...

DS will be 2 in less than 2 weeks... I feel like I should be starting, but I don't think he's ready yet.

I'm kind of scared to start Chat Icon

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

We started last month when he turned 2. He tells me when he has to poop... but then we put him on the potty and he tells me mommy no poop and then poops in his diaper a minute after I put it on. I have a feeling its gonna be a long road!

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

That's insane to me that they asked you that at 21 months to be honest.

I started to train my son right before three, and it didn't work, and my ped said that the average boy does not get potty trained until over three years of age.

We are currently in the middle of it right now (DS turned 3 in June) and I'm not giving up this time, so I hope it sticks.

MOST boys I know were trained around the age of three (whether it was a few mnths before, or a few mnths after)

This is the last thing I would tackle with a new baby on the way though.

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

My son is 3.5 years old and just finally starting using the potty last Thursday. We tried for the longest time but he refused to do it. And then when my 2nd son was born, he is 10 months now, Brandon wanted to be a baby in the worst way, so that just made it even harder. Our old pediatrician told us not to bother before three with boys that we would be wasting our time....she was right in his case. But I will try with our second before three.

We bought the book my big boy potty by Joanna Cole....which is a great book! We also put a sticker chart on the refrigerator and every time he goes, he gets to put a sticker on his chart, and his shirt. We also gave him a big kids ride on truck that was given to him as a present by his grandparents. We explained to him that it is for big boys only, and that only boys that don't wear dipers can ride it. He is so proud of himself, and makes sure to use the potty just so he can drive his new truck!!!

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

On his 3rd b-day! We had the potty for about a year, he never showed interest, but close to his 3rd birthday showed all the physical signs of being ready. We had tons of books and dvd's he watched them for a week or 2 and we talked about it and told him 3 year olds were not allowed to wear diapers. He woke up on his birthday all diapers were gone and replaced by big boy underwear. He did great. It was one of the easiest things I have had to do as a parent.

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

Oh that elmo video is awful. It made DS think going poop under the dining room table was acceptable. Don't watch it. I know many other people who had that issue too.

We started training today and DS is just over 3. I also had DD ten months ago and DS wanted to be a baby too. I would try to train at 21 months, but let him lead - he may be to young.

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

There is no way DS is ready to potty train at 22 months. If we ask him if he did poopy or pee pees, he shakes his head and says no.Chat Icon

I'm not even thinking about potty training until he recognizes what he is doing.

From what I gather, boys take longer to potty train than girls.

The best time is to train them is when they exhibit signs of readiness.

My DS was ready at 2 and was trained in a matter of days. Every kid is different.

Good Luck

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

thanks girls and that is really funny about the Elmo DVD...I definitely have heard boys are a lot harder to potty train but good to know the majority of you said by age 3. My ped said anytime between now and 3 years old but she said we could start now, so we went and bought a potty, that's as far as we've gotten. All he wanted to do yesterday was sit on it, but go figure, it's like a new toy.

Michmouse - what were your son's signs of being ready? How do you know, what was he doing/saying?

Everytime someone uses the bathroom in our house he wants to run in there and he says "daddy peepee or mommy peepee" and then he wants to come in the bathroom and take his diaper off lol. He tells us when he has to pee or poop. If you take his diaper off and tell him go pee he will make himself pee, so I know he can control it in some way.

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

I sort of feel that it is hard to know the signs of readiness because my son has always let me know when his diaper was dirty and ever since he could crawl he always went somewhere, i.e. moved locations, to poop in his diaper. For him those were not really signs of readiness but just how he is. He is almost 3 now. We put him on the bowl because he wants to sit there. He pees while sitting on the bowl but he also pees in diapers or in underwear when he wears it. I do not want to push it just for the sake of saying that he did it on the early side. I just started to give him a new Silly Band bracelet every time he pees on the potty and that is really speeding up this process. I will do more for potty training now because of this progress. I'm sure someone will say that rewards are not what worked for them but I got more success from it than I expected. I just don't let him sleep with the Silly Bands on and I prefer to leave them at home.

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

I was wondering the same thing. DS turned 2 in June and while I was still preggo with DS2 my mom kept telling me that I should train DS1 to make my life easier. I knew he wasn't ready yet. He doesn't tell me when he is dirty, he tells me NO if I ask. It doesn't bother him to be dirty. Plus we moved him into a big boy bed and I only wanted to tackle one big change at a time. He's now almost 27 months old, and I'm still waiting for a sign that he's interested. We bought the seat and a stool and books and talk to him about it, but if he's not ready, I'm not pushing it. It will just be more frustrating for us both.

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

We waited until DS told us he was ready. Then at 2years 9 months, he walked up to me one day and told me he didnt want to wear diapers anymore and hes been trained since then. It took about 2 full weeks before we were accident free/

Definitely check out the potty power for yout DC.

Re: Boy mommy's - When did you start potty training?

we didn't plan on potty training so early but right around 26 mos old, DS would tell us when he had to make poopie so we just started putting him on the toilet when he told us and it was great. he did poops on the toilet 90% of the time.

Pee, he was not so good with and we were starting to work on that but then baby #2 came 10 days ago and DS has completely regressed. since she has been home, he has pooped in his diaper every day!!

I would recommend waiting till after the baby is born to start. he is still young.
