How long should you keep a bottle? How do you know when it is begining to wear down?

Usually I throw mine away if the bottle is fading or starting to discolor, if the nipple is getting sticky, or if there is an odor that doesn't go away after washing. Most of the time I don't have to throw the bottle away itself, I just have to put a new nipple on.
