Booster vs. Convertible car seats

I thought i would ask the parents this question. Chat Icon
I registered for an infant seat that seats up to 30 pounds. So should I then move to a convertible seat or a booster seat after?
Whats the difference?
Thanks!

Convertible seat. Those usually go up to 65 lbs (give or take, depending on the model).

A booster is for older kids (4' 9"), who are too short to use just the seat belt, but too big for a car seat.

A convertible seat can be place rear facing, which you'll need to do when the baby outgrows the infant seat (My daughter switched at 4.5 months). A booster can only go forward, so is appropriate for older children.

Re: Booster vs. Convertible car seats

Infant car seat: Up to 22 Lbs and 29-30 inches and 1 year old

Convertible car seat (rear facing:same as infant car seat/forward facing: 40-65 Lbs depending on model and 40-49 inches also depending on model)

Booster seat: 40 Lbs and up and 4 years old

The main difference between the infant car seat and the convertible is that you can take the infant carseat out of the car with the baby to carry him/her or put on the stroller. You cannot with the convertible. The convertible will allow you to switch to forward facing so you have more use out of the seat.

Re: Booster vs. Convertible car seats

Aha I gotcha. Thanks!
I just wasn't sure at what point they would outgrow the infant (like what weight they would be at 1 year old) and would need either the convertible or booster.

For example-- If she is 30 pounds at 1 year old (I am clueless to baby weights and ages lol) you can go straight to the booster when you turn her around.
So thats what I was curious about. And not waste $ on a convertible.
But I think i got it now.

DS will be 3 months and will outgrow his carseat VERY quickly. He won't make it to 1 year. He is already 25 inches. I don't regret getting the infant carseat since it was part of my travel system but I just bought 2 convertible seats (on sale) for him. I made sure you get one that goes to 65 Lbs and 49 inches tall. I don't want to keep buying carseats that he will outgrow. One for DH's car and for mine. I did like the fact that you can carry the baby with it though. Someone at BBB told me that usually infant use it in average until they are 7-8 months old. DS is in the high percentile so it would be sooner for him.

I have the Snugride.

No, you are confusedChat Icon

You need hte convertible. The booster doesn't come into effect until after 40-60lbs.

We are still using the infant seat at 4.5 months, he has a while before he will be out of it.

If there is a waste that would be the infant carseat. I never saw a kid going from infant carseat to booster. You will need a convertible seat before you get a booster. They need to be able to hold themselves in the booster. It's just a "booster" so they can be at the right heigth for the regular car seatbelt.

Re: Booster vs. Convertible car seats

Oh, I'm definitely getting an infant seat. Theres no question there.

So convertible it is. I had forgotten that the convertible could be rear facing too. So thats why I was confused.

That's why some people skip the infant car seat. Because you can use the convertible as an infant carseat when rear facing.

Even if DS outgrow his infant carseat, I will have to put the convertible carseat rear facing until he meets the weight and heigth requirement to be forward facing.
