Books instead of cards at shower debate

Bump, book instead of card thread

I was looking for the poem that you use when asking guests to bring a children's book instead of a card and I found this bump thread......I cannot believe there are such judgmental people in this world, makes me sick! Anyway, it's pretty funny if you like Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Books instead of cards at shower debate

I received books for my shower instead of cards, it was great. My kids still ask me to read what each person wrote to them in the book and want to know what book is from whom.

If someone didn't want to give a book, they gave a card-no biggie.

eta-That thread is ridiculous...if you don't want to buy a book, don't.

Apparently this is what is happening at my shower, My mom read the poem to me, it was really cute, and I've actually had friends tell me how much they love the idea....I even just told my friend at work who lives in Far Rockaway, and never got the invite(mail is still wacky form Sadny), just so she would know and she didn't even blink an eye, just okay that sounds sweet.....

Re: Books instead of cards at shower debate

I love the ones who buy a card out of spite. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Last I checked, cards are ranging $3-$5 and usually get thrown out or rot in a box up in the attic. You could easily find a book for under $5 that would be put to good use.

I'd love to come back to this little gem:

"However, the guests at your shower should be the ones to decide what kind of gift they bring. You may not tell them or even politely ask them to bring you something specific. Because then, it really isn't a gift anymore."

UMMMM you DO tell them what kind of gift to bring and it's very specific. It's called a registry. I'm not down with the Bump so maybe registering for gifts is tacky to them too?

ETA: Some b*tch on the Bump gave the definition of a registry:

A registry is a list of things you would like and that you intend on purchasing no matter what. If people would like to pick something from that list, they can, if they want to buy you something else, they can do that to. A registry is not a demand to other people.

They really are a bunch of snotrags!

Cards ARE expensive! And I hate buying Dollar Tree cards because they look cheap! So I try to go to a 50% off card store if I can.

However, I can see some women being calculating..."Let's see, I would have spent $50 on the gift, but now I have to buy a book, so subtract $8...etc"

I hate to tell you but I doubt these women even come close to spending $50 on a shower gift, they seem like real winners!! haha!! Even when I lived in Alaska I spent between $50-$100 on shower gifts, and I was super young and cheap then!!! hahah!!!

My friend did that and it was great.

For my shower, my mom had bought a set of golden books and handed them out to guests and had guests write in them.

omg Chat Icon

That one mom needs a reality check.

I love the idea of bringing a book. It blows my mind but the people who consider themselves the etiquette police are usually the biggest offenders.

I loved receiving books for my LO at my shower, never even crossed my mind that people would find asking to do something like that tacky. It's a much better way of being remembered, seeing the special message you've written on the inside cover every time you open the book, than by the card you gave which honestly, I tossed.

Takes all types in this world.

I don't know what made me read that thread but I'm now so anxious lol
Women are nasty and wow the opinions are amazing. If you don't want to buy one don't. And cost shouldn't factor in. If you plan on spending 50.00 then instead of getting a 50 dollar gift get a 45.00 gift and take the 5.00 and spend it on a book. Geez lol

I personally love this idea and did this for both my sisters and sil showers

Re: Books instead of cards at shower debate

Sorry crashing. My sister asked for books for my shower for the wishing well, not in place of cards. If they wanted to bring a book they could or they could still get just bring a gift with a card and no book. It worked out. DS has a whole bunch of books and even the people who brought books still brought a card.

I wish this would have been done at my shower, I LOVE the idea! I started reading that Bump thread and couldn't get very far, those women are disgusting excuses for human beings. I don't know what it is with the Knot and the Bump, they really bring out some of the worst in humanity. Chat Icon

Never heard of this and I LOVE the idea. WOW to those biatches on that thread!!!! Totally rude and uncalled for! It's obvious they are purposely trying to start drama and controversy. Some people clearly have too much time on their hands if that is how they get entertainment.

So you see that one girl's profile at the bottom it says "Little Man (2 years old---holy cow)
Yes, he's mine. Yes, he's aware I'm a horrible mother. Yes, I plan on teaching him to act just like me.
No, CPS hasn't come to rescue him yet.
Yes, I'll make sure to let him know how sorry you feel for him."

Which clearly means she angered a lot of people on the Bump. Some people just clearly don't understand message board etiquette!!!!

I LOVE this idea! They did this as my friends shower and then I mentioned it to my MIL and they did it at my SIL's shower. It's not engraved in stone that you HAVE to bring a book instead of a card. Is it really THAT important that people have to be so negative about something that people want to do? I didn't read the thread because I'm pretty sure I would just get too annoyed (hormones are RAGING).

I wonder what these girls have to say about girls who want to do display showers and not open gifts or ask people to not wrap the gifts to be "green"!!!! My thought is ALWAYS "it's not my shower so whatever the planners and mother/bride want, then just smile and go along with it."

I really want to reply to that one trashy girl that keeps commenting. Anyone who would write a rude response just to piss people off because it gives YOU entertainment has no right calling anyone or anything "tacky" lmao.

I wonder what kind of white trash shower that girl had!!! lol Sorry I couldnt resist!

Re: Books instead of cards at shower debate

People are absurd, some of those responses are just ridiculous. My sister put something about bringing a book to help build baby's library on my shower invite and not even in lieu of a card AND we had a separate thing for the guys and called it an "Eat, Drink and Bring Diapers" party... so basically these women would have burnt me at the stake... I had people who gave insanely generous gifts, books, buy diapers and a card. And now Matthew has quite the book collection and I haven't had to buy diapers or wipes yet and we still have a cases in the closet... and I would would do (and have done) the same for anyone else. I am sure there were people who thought the whole thing was ridiculous but if someone didn't want to bring a book they didn't and if they didn't want to go to the "man party" they didn't have to.

I think it has to do also where people are from. I belong to another board and its amazing how in other states people get so offended if people get upset if items aren't bought off the registry. The registry mentality maybe is an east coast thing. Honestly don't know. I've seen woman get really nasty when others bring up a registry. I'm like ok, I don't get it.
