Books instead of cards at a shower

Has anyone heard of this? Maybe I've been out of the baby shower loop to long, but I love this idea and thought I would share it.

I received an invitation today for a shower next month and it had the following poem:

Although cards are nice they're read only once or twice
A book is a treasure forever and ever
So instaed of card to be put aside
Please give baby a book with your name inside
It'll be read to our type
Before bed each night
And we'll thank you forever and ever

Re: Books instead of cards at a shower

I've been to showers like that and it was a great idea but not everyone did it. I'm not crazy about the idea b/c I don't like telling people what to bring and I will enjoy selecting my own books for my child. I just pray that I will have time, as book shopping is a fun luxury. If not, I have a friend who has 100s of children's books and she said I will get them as her son outgrows them.

Re: Books instead of cards at a shower

That's a cute idea....but I also like to get cards! I usually take a few of the best ones and include them in a scrapbook of some sort.
I've heard of people bringing books instead of wishing well gifts, which I also think is a great thought.

I love the idea! However, I don't think it necessarily has to be in place of cards.

Re: Books instead of cards at a shower

My sister and mom did this with my shower invites. I grew up in a house full of avid readers, and being a speech-pathologist, I KNOW how important reading to your little ones can help with language development, so I truly adored this idea.

I LOOOOOOVE the crazy books I got for Maddie.

Believe me- You would think I would've gotten lots of duplicates of the "classics", but I didn't. People were pretty creative and I got books I haven't thought about in years- plus some new ones I'd never heard of.

My mom and sister did a variation of this for me, they did books as a wishing well.

Re: Books instead of cards at a shower

I've done this before for a shower - my only suggestion though is to NOT write anything in the book.

The mother will definitely get doubles - as was the case for both times this was done. The mother was able to return the books I brought because I didn't write anything in them.

GOOD POINT.....I think I will pick up a small card and put it in the book. If they like it or don't need to return it they can write our names in it.

Thanks for the tip!

I like the idea too but I would suggest not writing in it.

I received 4 copies of Goodnight Moon I but was able to return two.

Re: Books instead of cards at a shower

I still love the thought of getting cards. I still have cards from so many milestones in my life and I do take them out occasionally to read them.

I especially love to read the ones of loved ones that are no longer here (my grandparents, father, etc...) Those really mean the world to me.

Re: Books instead of cards at a shower

We did this at my shower and it was great. I LOVE having the books....

and actually I DID WANT people to write it it. I didnt get one double and I had about 55 or so people at my shower. ( I got about 60 books) Now I have all these books I can read to him and some of the inscriptions are great and personal.

ETA- My poem said in lieu of cards and only ONE person out of 55 didnt give an actual card....LOL

I love this idea. You can never have too many books for a baby and duplicates come in handy for the car, diaper bag, grandma's house, etc!
