being effective on weight machines

I joined a gym recently but I always feel like I'm floundering on the weight machines b/c I don't know what to do to be effective. I can't afford personal training so I'm wondering if there's a website or an app that gives recommendations on making the most of my time there and keeps track of my progress.

I know I can take classes but sometimes I want to use the machines (not necessarily free weights until I'm more comfortable).

I use this app all of the time (Free)

Workout Trainer by Skimble

It is great for giving you various workouts and has good filters too to narrow down your search. I haven't looked for workouts dedicated to machines, as I often just use dumbbells as needed.

Hope it helps!

As far as using machines, I tend to typically do a machine for 3 sets. Depending on your goals, you can vary the sets in different ways.

For instance, I'll do 10-12 reps 3 x. First set will be a manageable but slightly challenging weight; 2nd set will be a heavier weight challenging me to finish the reps; 3rd set to the same weight as the 1st set.

Another way I work the sets will also be to do 10 reps at heaviest weight I can, 2nd set I will drop the weight a little bit and complete 20 reps, and then drop weight again and complete 30 reps for 3rd set.

I went over the weekend and the machines were set to the lowest weight and I could barely do 3 sets of 4. Chat Icon I have very little upper body strength!!

I get a fee personal training session - which is tonight - so I'm going to ask them to walk me through it tonight to make my time there more effective.

Re: being effective on weight machines

I got into weightlifting by following people on IG. I now lift 4x a week. I do a push.pull split for upper body and 2 lower body days.

I personally wouldn't limit myself to machines. Dumbbells are often more intuitive than the machines. I typically do 4 sets of 8-12 reps. I pick a weight that I can lift comfortably, but the last 2-3 reps of each set are challenging.

Good Luck! Everyone starts out as a beginner so no need to feel self conscious. Also - the people at the gym should be able to show you how to properly use the machines even if you are not using them for personal training. So if you are unsure, ask for help!

I was gonna ask if you ever used your free session. Most gyms have them. They will show you what you need to know. Other members are pretty helpful as well.

I just started at crunch fitness, had my free session and took my first class. The other members helped me through what I had no idea how to do lol

My first session was a bust. Had me do a few squats and push ups to get an idea of how I move. She's going to come up with a plan for me and I go back for my second free session.

On the flip side, I took a class that used all free weights and it was a great (and painful) workout. I think for now I might stick with the classes until I get comfortable working it into my life before looking into the classes. I'll just make sure to take the strength classes and not cardio b/c I run on the treadmill at home and don't need it at the gym (other than a warm up).

Sounds like you were receiving a fitness assessment, not a training session - very different things, and pretty common practice.

Keep in mind these "free sessions" are really an opportunity for trainers to sell, so I would not expect to get all of what you need in one meeting, but hopefully someone can help you out.

Re: being effective on weight machines

I just google videos on what muscles I want to target. I get bored easy with the same exercises. sometimes I bring my phone and watch the videos at the gym.
I usually do 3 sets of 10-12 reps of that muscle group. I usually do three different exercises for the same muscle group. I start the first set at a lighter weight. The last set I set it at my heaviest weight, and may do 10 reps . (to tire the muscle)
