Bathroom with child of the opposite sex
The post on the other board got me thinking about this. My youngest has autism and is 6 years old. Most likely I will be taking the bathroom as a teenager and adult. Of course if DH is with me, he will go with him. But many times I am out alone with him because of work schedules, splitting kids with different activities, etc.
While there is definitely more awareness and more family bathrooms, we know that’s not always the case. My son is minimally verbal but that’s not to say he is not loud. Lol. He makes a ton of noises and yes is super loud. I went into the ladies room at Target the other day (he told me pee pee so I had to take him at that moment) and he was making all his usual noises and you should’ve seen the looks we got. I would like to say I’ve gotten somewhat immune but deep down it does bother me sometimes.
I just wonder what the future will look like one day when I am bringing my pre teen son into a public restroom? Yes of course I always make sure he goes before he leaves the house but sometimes it can’t be avoided.

I try to find some place like a Starbucks, etc, where they have single bathrooms. Then I can stand outside while my boys go.

This is us too. My son will be 7 in August, he is severe nonverbal and also makes noises. However he cannot go to the bathroom by himself and needs assistance. My husband will take him into the men's room if he is with us but if not I have no choice but to take him into the women's room. BTW I cannot stand ignorant people.

Bathroom with child of the opposite sex
You do what you need to do to make sure your child is safe. If people do not understand then screw them. I really think though over the next 10 years, most bathrooms will be family bathrooms due to the transgender awareness and rights movement so hopefully it won't matter soon.

Fyi, next to the pharmacy at target is a larger single stall bathroom.

Agree about the ignorant people. People have no clue!

I agree...My son is 12, although he is pretty independent in the bathroom, however, if we are in a place that is crowded and my DH is not with me, he comes in with me, or his twin brother will take him in.
